You don't have to mark everything permanently the first time through. You can mark the "definite reds" and "definite blues" and use post-it notes or something to temporarily mark the verses you're not sure about. Once you get farther into the project, you'll have a better sense of what would constitute a "neutral/other" category, or if there are any other major categories you're missing, and it'll be pretty simple to go back to the earlier references and quickly mark them.

Are you planning on reading the OT and NT straight through? It might be to your advantage to skip back and forth, so you have in mind what the range is.

(This is essentially a problem of classification theory, which is right up my alley, so I'm geeking out a bit. :))

You could also start with a small sample of OT and NT chapters and mark them (non-permanently) to see if your classification system holds up at least for the small sample.

I'm actually hoping to do all of the standard works (though, I'll probably leave D&C for last, because it rather frightens me). I started on the BoM today, figuring that it's smaller, and thus cheaper, and if I get halfway through and realize I want to do it all differently, it'll be cheaper to start over. :) Silly reasoning, I know. Also, turns out I have my scripture marking pencils in storage. So I'm gonna have to go buy new ones. So temporarily I'm using just a regular pencil and putting stars in the margins where I want to mark.

One chapter in and I'm already feeling a bit overwhelmed. It's hard to really figure out what I'm going for. When God gives Lehi a vision in answer to his prayer, is that an attribute of God? When prophets preach God's words, is that an attribute of God? When Nephi is highly favored of the Lord, is that an attribute?

And Katya, I forgot that you're a classification geek. Because i'm not. I'm not organized at all. So this is really an overwhelming project. But I really, really feel like I should do it. I've been wanting to for probably a year or so now, and it just seems like good timing. So please, give me all the advice you've got! See if you can catch me on chat sometimes if it's gonna be too much to put in here. (Though, warning: my computer is downstairs and I spend much of my time upstairs. I leave my chat open, but away. So go ahead and start a chat and hopefully I'll see it before you get offline.)

I ended up being too busy last night to chat, but I'll try to catch you this afternoon/evening.
