#66137 - minors

Post by Katya »

http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/66137/

I agree with RP on many things, but I've never understood his antipathy towards minors (not to mention his outright hatred of double majors).

However, a line from his answer to this question gave me a possible insight as to the cause of his feelings:
Rating Pending wrote:I can see how being able to say you minored in something gives you official recognition for something that you like enough to devote significant time to it.
If RP thinks that "official recognition" is the best reason for completing a minor, then I heartily agree that one's time, effort, and money might be better spent elsewhere.

However, I humbly submit that there are other possible motivations, many of which are much better (both in terms of overall motivation and in terms of how well a formal minor satisfies them).

To wit:

1. Because it's required. (Some majors require a minor or have options that can be filled through specific minors.)

2. Because it's free (or almost free). (Some majors have requirements that fill all of or most of the requirements for a minor in another department. E.g., when I was at BYU, chemistry majors were required to take 8 of the 9 classes necessary for a physics minor, so many of them went ahead and took the 9th class, too.)

3. Because you want to broaden your knowledge in a certain area.* (See below, due to length.)

4. Because you want to impress people. (I suppose there might be people in the world who are impressed by a minor, but I wouldn't call that a good reason to get one. Also, someone who wants to go around impressing people with their minor sounds like someone I would find highly annoying.)

5. Because you are indecisive. (Some people have a hard time making decisions and hate the idea of closing off any options. While I sympathize with this situation, college is a time for specialization — grad school even more so.)

6. Because you want official recognition. (About the only official recognition you'll get is a note on your transcript; minors don't appear on your diploma.)

____________________
*This is likely to be the most controversial justification, since it marks the transition between "no brainer" and "no way" rationales. It's also the most vaguely defined and so covers a wide range of possible situations, so I'll flesh out only some of the issues involved. Is this the same as being indecisive? No. It could be a thoughtful decision to broaden or supplement a major, possibly in preparation for a career or graduate work. Can't you just be an autodidact? Some areas of study require access to specialized equipment or resources. In addition, some people learn better in a more formal environment. Are you taking away resources from other students by taking extra classes? Possibly, and I have no doubt that this is one of the factors at play in BYU's decisions to disallow second bachelor's degrees and crack down on double majors. However, I don't see that cranking as many people as possible through a rigid, bare-bones educational system is the best approach to education, either. I would argue that a balance should be maintained.

(I should probably clarify that I don't take issue with the advice given to the reader in #6617 - it doesn't sound like adding a minor is necessarily the best option for her - but I've seen RP speak out many times against minors and double majors, such as in #50982, #56467, and #63863, as well as in this question.)

I just wanted to say when I read the title of this thread that I thought it would be about a completely different type of minor. That is all.

So did I. And I continued to until Katya said "double majors". I couldn't figure what RP had against underage people.

And then there's matrix minors in linear algebra. Who really groks why they work when calculating the determinant?

Yes, there are many minors.

Back to the original topic, I think minoring is a good thing. My dad was talking to me a few weeks back how having two specialties can make you more employable. Now I have no idea how my minor (music) could help my major (civil engineering) except for the fact that it keeps me balanced and sane.

I just want to add to the discussion that soon after I declared my double major in Food Science and Russian, and was mocked my many people despite the fact that the Russian major required a minor or second major, I soon landed an internship with a government organization looking for someone with a Food Science background who could travel to Ukraine and oversee a course on food safety they were conducting in that country to help them reach US standards and be able to export their products to the US. I'm pretty sure I got the position because I was the only person in the country that was double majoring in Food Science and Russian.

Bottom Line: You never know what opportunities the future holds. Study what you love and hope for the best.

I am now in a Russian Literature PhD program, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been accepted without having that additional major in Russian. But if I ever need a stable job, I can always find one in the Food Industry thanks to my major in Food Science. I was able to get a fairly good food science job while my wife went to school for her Master's degree--this was definitely better than working in retail or something, which is what my wife had to do during the first year of my PhD program because even with a Master's degree it was hard to find a teaching job. Basically, having a double major has given me more opportunities in my life. It also prevented me from taking an array of odd electives in college that would serve no later purpose (although I usually took 18+ credits each semester in order to take those odd electives as well--Child Development, Archaeology, History of Jazz, and Contemporary Classical Music in Pop Culture being a few of the more memorable ones).

Yarjka, that is a great story! What a fantastic outcome.

I definitely think there is a place for minors and double majors. Blanket stating "they are all useless" (paraphrase... :)) is unfair.

I wonder if chemical engineering and mortuary science would raise some eyebrows. I've been trying to think of other combinations :)

Vassar actually encourages double majors (liberal arts school and all that). I never did one because once I declared my drama major, I decided that was all I wanted, but I had a friend triple major in Drama, French, and Psych who is now a professional actress, but Psych is super useful in acting, and you never know when you'll need to speak French onstage!

Also, I think it's weird that BYU puts your major on your diploma. I dunno. Seems strange to me.

I'm getting a business minor. Mostly because having business classes makes hiring a history major slightly more attractive.

Graduation does come eventually. I almost minored in Theater with my Family Life major, but the only classes I had left to complete the minor were the same classes that were the reason i left the Theater major in the first place. And hey, the first job I got out of college (aka the one I started two weeks ago) is a supervisor/programmer at a call center. What I want to do with the rest of my life? No. Helpful for me to save up for my second bachelors in engineering? oh yeah.
