Houses

Just for curiosity's sake, here's a poll. You can choose two options, and you can re-vote if you messed up.

Hmm... Interesting answers so far.

Way to float outside the mainstream, kids!

estimated time of arrival:

I just took 4 different quiz versions.

1) Image

2) Gryffindor.

3) Image

4) Slytherin

I answered all the questions honestly except for the one on the last one where I said I wanted to be in Slytherin.

Pottermore sorted me Ravenclaw...And I've done it a couple of different times.

I also stopped being Gryffindor once I stopped trying to always get Gryffindor. I'm not really one at heart.

I read a fanfiction a couple weeks ago that really got me thinking about Houses and what it means to belong to a house. But it's kind of a pain to try and write lots of words on my kindle especially if I'm not sure exactly where I'm headed, so my thoughts may have to wait until Monday.

I'm not part of pottermore but I have identified as hufflepuff ever since I realized it was okay not to be a ravenclaw.

Nice. I used to identify myself as Hufflepuff. And then I became a Ravenclaw.

But I have never, ever identified as a Gryffindor or Slytherin.

IE recognizes Gryffindor alone of the 4 houses as a real word.

I'm Hufflepuff through and through. Not that I'm necessarily proud of that. My inner self wishes I was Slytherin, but that's just not my style, nor would I be happy there. Gryffindor would be fine. I'm in no way interested in Ravenclaw, though. Not really sure why that is.

I've done Pottemore a few times, and I've gotten 3 for Slytherin and 2 for Gryffindor.

I always get Hufflepuff, too.

I like the description: the loyal, dependable, and hardworking. I value those things more highly than I value the traits of the other houses.
I don't like the portrayal. They often seem to be the leftovers: the ones who aren't smart or brave or ambitious, but they're niiiice, so that's okay, right? And then they're vapid and excessively cheerful and not central to the plot.

I just spent 30 minutes on pottermore just to be sorted into Gryffindor. I found another quiz that sorted me into Ravenclaw where I really belong, though.

These actually remind me very much of the Four Color Personality System. Looks like the Board Board attracts a certain "type."

Seems like Gimmy doesn't think the Ravenclaw vs. Gryffindor result is random. http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/70951/

Okay, it's Monday. Let me see if I can coherent some of my thoughts.

(here's a link to the fanfiction I mentioned, by the way)

I think there are different reasons to be Sorted into a House. Most often we think that because our most significant personality trait fits into what the House is known for, that's the House we belong in. Which is a valid reason. But I also think that you could be put into a House because you should work on developing those traits, or the Sorting Hat sees that potential in you.

So first of all an eleven-year-old has to think hard enough about oneself to come to the conclusion one way or the other, which can be hard. But it seems to me they all do that anyway. It's the nature of being Sorted.

But I also think that discovering (in such a public way) that you are loyal, smart, bold, or cunning is also an invitation to develop the other traits. Slytherins especially have a reputation for becoming more and more selfish as the years go on, and the imbalance (or belief that all the other Houses have inferior traits) doesn't bode well for unity.

The Sorting Hat really should write a song about that.

(Did that make sense? I don't think it did. But I tried. And then gave up halfway through.)

I pulled this off of Mugglenet because I'm too lazy to type it out myself:

Order of the Phoenix- Sorting Hat Song

In times of old when I was new
And Hogwarts barely started
The Founders of our noble school
Thought never to be parted:
nited by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
"Together we will build and teach!"
The Four good friends decided
And never did they dream that they
Might someday be divided,
For were there such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor?
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw?
So how could it have gone so wrong?
How could such friendships fail?
Why, I was there and so can tell
The whole sad, sorry tale.
Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry is purest."
Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest."
Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name,"
Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot,
And treat them just the same."
These differences caused little strife
When first they came to light,
For each of the four founders had
A House in which they might
Take only those they wanted, so,
For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning, just like him,
And only those of sharpest mind
Were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor,
Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest,
And taught them all she knew,
Thus the Houses and their founders
Retained friendships firm and true.
So Hogwarts worked in harmony
For several happy years,
But the discord crept among us
Feeding on our faults and fears.
The Houses that, like pillars four,
Had once held up our school,
Now turned upon each other and,
Divided, sought to rule.
And for a while it seemed the school
Must meet an early end,
What with dueling and with fighting
And the clash of friend on friend
And at last there came a morning
When old Slytherin departed
And though the fighting then died out
He left us quite downhearted.
And never since the founders four
Were whittled down to three
Have the Houses been united
And they once were meant to be.
And now the Sorting Hat is here
And you all know the score:
I sort you into Houses
Because that is what I'm for,
But this year I'll go further,
Listen closely to my song:
Though condemned I am to split you
Still I worry that it's wrong,
Though I must fulfill my duty
And must quarter every year
Still I wonder whether sorting
May not bring the end I fear.
Oh, know the perils, read the signs,
The warning history shows,
For our Hogwarts is in danger
From external, deadly foes
And we must unite inside her
Or we'll crumble from within
I have told you, I have warned you..
Let the sorting now begin
