My grandma used to have a weird name that she hated. While she was a teenager, she took up a variation of her adopted father's nickname as her own and it's since been made her legal name. While I think people should try to accept their name as their own, if they hate it they should be able to change it. The trick, of course, is convincing everyone to use it :).

I wonder how long that has been true. E.g., look at Cotton and Increase Mather. (Although maybe those were weird names even for the 17th century.)
