Mico, for the record, my mom is from Mexico and my dad is from Canada. Same general idea, though.
Yes, there's a problem when we are ONLY identified by a given characteristic, and I suspect being black in Utah engenders a fair bit of that. Like, perhaps, being male in a nursing program. Or being mormon in Europe. Or being Hispanic in....Utah. I would be frustrated if it was the only characteristic that people ever saw in me, or ever talked about.
But this isn't what we're talking about. We're talking about if it is EVER ok. And as long as we think it isn't ok to talk about it, we make it not ok to BE it.
