My laptop is sitting on my lap. On a board. On a towel. On some ice packs.

Yep.

Hmm...this makes me wonder if you're in my ward.

Wow. That's pretty amazing if your ward can pull it off. I don't think many could consistently provide two musical numbers.

It's actually the second ward I've been in where we pulled it off.

It's only been that way since 2007.

Yep. And just dying in general. Usually the heat doesn't bother me too much (though the burn mark on the bottom of the laptop keeps getting bigger), but sometimes I like to play games. Which is just too hard for this thing.

I'm very much looking forward to this fall, when I'll be able to afford a new laptop. : )

Please, please tell me you back everything up on a regular basis (e.g., daily). (Granted, you should do that anyway, but in this case... :) )

Oh look... Laser Jock's avatar works too. I'm sensing a major conspiracy here.

Also, we now have an "abuse" button. I choose to read that s as a z sound, as opposed to an s. Because my way is much more entertaining.

Yep. We're trying to make our lives look more vibrant than yours, or something. :)

The connection seems to be that both of us have our images hosted elsewhere, and the forum just points to them, while I'm guessing all the missing images were uploaded to this forum and got missed in the upgrade...however, we ought to be able to get (most of) them back even if Informe can't; both Google's archived view and the Internet Archive should be able to help.

Good thing I never used an avatar, otherwise I would be upset at you.

what does the "abuse" button do? is that the same thing as the "report a violation" button?

Yes. But it's so much more fun to pretend I'm beating someone up on the internet.

Eh. I don't really know how to do that. But all of my important documents have been stored on the internets in case of a crash. I'm still trying to decide on the best way to save my pictures when I have no money.

One or two blank CDs, maybe? Or a flash drive? Oh, hello. Picasa. Just upload them all to the internet too.

You might look at Windows Live SkyDrive. They give you 25 GB of storage for free. I haven't really used it, but it looks like a decent option. The drawback is that I doubt you can have it automatically synchronize with a folder on your computer, but as a I-have-no-money option it's not bad.

If you don't have all that many pictures, you could give a couple of different online backup services a try; most give you a couple GB free. (Options include companies like Mozy and Carbonite.) Something like DropBox would also be worth a look.

If you want an actual backup solution once you do have money, I'd suggest looking at either Mozy ($5/month for unlimited online backup space) or an external hard drive (500GB for $60, 1TB for $70, both including shipping). Or ideally, both, which would give you the peace of mind of having professionals making sure your data survives (online) plus a local drive for much faster recovery, should you need it. (One drawback to relying on only an external drive is that in the event of a physical disaster like a fire or something, the backup will probably be destroyed too. But downloading tens of gigabytes is painfully slow, which is online backup's weakness.)

One thing to look out for is that Picasa is set to resize your photos by default, I believe. If you want to use Picasa as backup, make sure you can store the originals there. (It's in the settings somewhere, and I'm too lazy to look right now. :) )
