Here are a few old-fashioned tips for wedding conversations. I think this comes from Emily Post. 1960. http://www.nigelworks.com/andrea/pages/post.html Perhaps it applies to an announcement of a pending marriage:

But remember it is a breach of good manners to congratulate a bride on having secured a husband.

If you are unknown to both of them, and in a long queue, it is not even necessary to give your name. You merely shake hands with the groom, say a formal word or two such as "Congratulations!"; shake hands with the bride, say "I wish you every happiness!" and pass on.

If you know them fairly well, you may say to him "I hope your good luck will stay with you always!" or "I certainly do congratulate you!" and to her "I hope your whole life will be one long happiness," or, if you are much older than she, "You look too lovely, dear Mary, and I hope you will always be as radiant as you look to-day!" Or, if you are a woman and a relative or really close friend, you kiss the groom, saying, "All the luck in the world to you, dear Jim, she certainly is lovely!" Or, kissing the bride, "Mary, darling, every good wish in the world to you!"

To all the above, the groom and bride answer merely "Thank you."

A man might say to the groom "Good luck to you, Jim, old man!" Or, "She is the most lovely thing I have ever seen!" And to her, "I hope you will have every happiness!" Or "I was just telling Jim how lucky I think he is! I hope you will both be very happy!" Or, if a very close friend, also kissing the bride, "All the happiness you can think of isn't as much as I wish you, Mary dear!" But it cannot be too much emphasized that promiscuous kissing among the guests is an offense against good taste.

So congratulate the groom on his good fortune, and wish the bride every happiness. I still hear that kind of advice given.

We got Wii Sports Resort for Christmas. I was so excited yesterday to get the Secret whatever stamp in Archery. I'd been working on it for days. This morning my brother (who hadn't been working on it as of yesterday) texted me to tell me he got the stamp this morning. I currently hate him. (But not really, cuz I heart him lots.)

So in retaliation I was going to get all the archery stamps (I already have 4 of the 5), but Dragon Baby wanted nothing more than to crawl all over me. Which makes holding a bow steady difficult. So instead I went and got all the wakeboarding stamps. The last two had been just out of my reach for days. But today, I did it!

I am pleased.

Seriously! We want to get a tall bookshelf because it's more space-efficient, but I've heard horror stories of kids who get crushed by those because it's a fun place to climb. These days, I think they make wall supports for a lot of tall furniture. You can somehow bolt it to the wall, so it won't ever tip.

In California, where we have earthquakes, you really need to bolt your bookshelves to the wall. It isn't that hard to do.

Yeah, we can bolt it. They're IKEA bookcases that come with the stuff to bolt them, but we had most of the furniture before we got married, let alone had a kid, so we never did it, and thus don't have most of the stuff to do it anymore. We've been meaning to go to IKEA to see if they sell that part by itself, but never got around to it. Needless to say, it's become a priority to do so.

We just bought two simple right-angle brackets, and four screws for each bookcase. We screwed the bracket to the top of the bookcase, and to the wall.

Seriously. That's all it takes. Just head over to the local ACE or probably even WalMart.

My sister has a bookcase that is mostly fine, but if you open the glass doors, the weight of them is great enough to tip it slightly forward. So when we moved into the house, we anchored it to the wall and were super proud of ourselves... until we decided we didn't like where we had positioned it. But since we had already bolted it to the wall, it stayed put.

I got a pay raise today at work. This is exciting, yet depressing, since I will be forced to quit my job in a few months for my internship.

Since our apartment is perpetually buried under miscellaneous papers, we went out and bought a filing cabinet today. I haven't played with tools in a LONG time, so I pretty much begged my husband to let me assemble it. And now it's done, and I'm feeling very proud of myself.

But my hands are killing me...darn you, manual screwdrivers! Bless the soul who invented the electric drill.
