Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
I always feel a slight rush when one of my comments gets posted. It sort of almost makes me feel like a board writer, though I'd never actually be one because writing is NOT my strong suit.

Reading the work of others in peer workshops usually has one of two results: either a smug sense of superiority at what I do, or fear and intense feelings of inadequacy. I'm sure neither are really a healthy outlook, but at the moment I'm feeling the latter and longing for the former.

What do you teach? That actually fits in really well with some things I'll be doing with my junior English classes in the next few weeks -- apparently they need to be taught how to read infographics?wryness wrote:I am planning on giving my students a little spiel about ouse tomorrow (specifically social media), and I found this study. I had the students read the article about Rebecca Sedwick that someone linked to from here (was that Katya? Thanks to whoever it was), and I'm going to try to help them understand how they are sort of being conditioned to believe that they can't survive without technology.
But that study--ARGH! The scariest statistic for me is the percentage of teens who say that they would rather TEXT their friends than spend time with them in person. 33%! ARGH! I don't think I've said "argh" enough yet. ARGH!
Now I'm thinking about Fahrenheit 451 and scriptures that say "the love of many shall wax cold" and a lot of other things. But ARGH! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!
(That was probably enough "arghs" for now.)

I never should have moved. Blah. :-(

Well, instead of moping, I found a job in my industry in Orem, aka Party Town, USA. ;) Same pay, better lifestyle, could get married ... Wish me luck!

3 hours left in my Kickstarter and we're at $510! Apparently I can be successful!
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

I do. Assuming I am competent enough to be employed, we should have a coming-home party.Whistler wrote:aww I didn't realize you missed us so much :-)

really interesting linguistics article that's not really news.

That's fascinating. I wonder if anyone has compared twin languages with pidgin or creole languages, since they seem to have some morphological similarities (and they're both examples of new language creation).Giovanni Schwartz wrote:http://nautil.us/issue/6/secret-codes/t ... -champions
