My brother bought it and was very disappointed and told me I shouldn't read it due to content. I trusted him on that and have never had a desire to read it since.

Ah, how interesting! Now I'm really curious. The description always sounded to me like a standard mystery novel, but then I've only read maybe one or two mystery novels anyway.

Hmm. I don't think I've ever heard it used that way. I thought the euphemism for that was "thematic elements." I think of "content" as in "content creation" for a website, which is positive or neutral, so I was very confused.

By that measure, every. single. one. of the books I read for my degree had "content" that could have been objectionable to someone. Shhhh, don't tell!

I just developed vertigo, completely out of the blue. I hope the little exercises the doctor gave me clear up the problem, because feeling constantly seasick is not fun. Also I'm having a hard time focusing, because my eyes are trying to make up for the fact that I'm falling or spinning or whatever it is my brain is under the impression I'm doing. Blech.

Incidentally, what is your degree? I bet I've read way more objectionable things for my degree than you have for yours.

French Lit. Have you read Dangeous Liaisons or Justine? You can't even get Justine from BYU's library unless you ask for it.

I actually intended it as, "because of the content in the book, he didn't recommend it for me." I didn't mean "content" in any specific way. Though, sexual content is the specific reason, if I remember correctly.

aww... does ginger help at all? Is it possible you have a sinus infection (because there's a sinus in your head that when clogged can mess with your sense of balance)?

Apparently, I've got BVVP, which means that little calcium stones have formed (for seemingly no reason!) in my inner ear, and so where normally my ear hairs sense some sort of fluid swishing around in there, now they're just sensing these stones, which don't move when I move. The exercises are designed to shift the stones out of where they are, and to somewhere else where they won't mess up my sense of balance. So food doesn't seem to change much. But that isn't stopping me from eating chicken noodle soup.

Gah, that sounds crappy. Have you tried shaking your fist at your ears? And frowning and using words like "consarnit" and "dad-burned" while you're at it? I have found that sounding like an old man/prospector in these sorts of situations always helps. Feel better soon bippy.

November has fallen on my like a ton of bricks. I was sick all last week, including a 2+ day migraine over the weekend, and this week I've been crazy busy because I'm on a search & screen committee for an open faculty position and we're having finalist presentations. I don't even have time to do my regular work, let alone anything extra.

Good luck, Katya! I feel like that's how I welcomed my November, too. 19 baptisms, alone and newly pregnant. Yellow and I both got stomach bugs. Dragon Baby now has a bad cough that keeps her up and has made her throat so sore she doesn't want to eat anything and cries when she drinks water. (Note: go buy her some Pediasure...) Both girls wake up 2-3 times every night, so no one gets a good night sleep. So we're all cranky all day. And now I'm working on hostessing Thanksgiving for my family at my house and a surprise birthday dinner for my dad the very next day. Because I'm insane.

Is it funny that I'm looking forward to December as a time to finally relax?

I think I'm going to dye my hair brown tonight. I haven't dyed it in a year and a half, but it's looking a bit blah. I think dark brown can look good with my coloring. Hopefully it works out. (My latest haircut I have mixed feelings about: she put layers back in, and dealing with them has been ... different.)

I keep seeing pictures of sexy redheads, but I tried that once, and it was baaad on me. The dark brown will probably fade to my natural dark blonde soon enough.

I'd often wondered just how many unmarried BYU students have sex. (It looks like it hovers around 3-4%, which seems about right to me.) I haven't yet had time to read this BYU Studies article in full, but it looks like it touches on a lot of those questions in a pretty straightforward way. The most surprising to me may be how few women rank obtaining a job they like as "very important."

Also sobering:

Many BYU students have as many dates in one month as the senior women in the national study had in nearly four years.

Wow.

I read that statistic once before I started BYU. I think I read it comparing individual years to four years of college, but it was pretty eye-opening to how different BYU is as a school in not just the first-come-to-mind ways.

Maybe my extended friend group at BYU was overly-sexual (or they didn't care about the rules or getting caught) but I would have guessed closer to 6-7% of unmarrieds based on the people I knew were having sex and then some suspected. Or maybe things changed over the 10 years since the survey was sent out? It'd be interesting to look at again.
