Violet wrote:I read that statistic once before I started BYU. I think I read it comparing individual years to four years of college, but it was pretty eye-opening to how different BYU is as a school in not just the first-come-to-mind ways.
Maybe my extended friend group at BYU was overly-sexual (or they didn't care about the rules or getting caught) but I would have guessed closer to 6-7% of unmarrieds based on the people I knew were having sex and then some suspected. Or maybe things changed over the 10 years since the survey was sent out? It'd be interesting to look at again.
It's definitely a social group thing. Mine was probably 50/50. Ha! Birds of a feather and all that.
I actually felt that the current students were less permissive than those of my generation. For instance, I think NCMO is more frowned on now than it was in the mid-'00s. I have super-lots of theories for those who care. (PM me. It will end up long and boring to most here.)

I hate it when I decide to make a gift the day after a really good sale on the materials. [sigh]

Our new place in TN is really nice and spacious and pretty much perfect in every way, EXCEPT there are earwigs. I really really hate earwigs you guys.

It was the Board Board that introduced me to Hyperbole and a Half.
Enjoy this New York Times video. (No paywall on vids, hooray.)

Inappropriate facebook post of the day:
A friend posts a picture of his wonderful, adorable, 7-months-pregnant wife. His great aunt comments, "Watch the weight gain! No more than 15 pounds!" Sheesh.

Oh my gosh if you want to play that game, you should be friends with my aunt. Her comments are, at best, tangentially relevant to anything, and only funny because she's so clueless about sarcasm and the whole "right time and place" concept.

As someone with a later chronotype and whose performance and happiness plummets if I have to wake up much before 9:00, I thought this
article sounded perfect.
Now if I can find a job that lets me feel well-rested ...

As I was the chronically late senior in high school, I wish we could do that in Utah. At least in college, you do your own schedule.

Yes! Tempting to go back to school for just that reason.
This up-by-7:30 thing has me depressed, gaining weight, and doing poorly at work. Yesterday morning, I found a comfortable chair and was dead gone for an hour. It's dumb, because it's software, it's not like you have to be in early, but that's the latest bus.
It was much better when I carpooled and got an extra hour or two in. It makes a huge difference, just two hours. I'm most alert at 10 PM.

I'm the opposite. My best day so far this week was the one where I got up at 6:45 instead of 7:30 or later.

I think the net cast has turned up some excellent probies. They get the Portia Seal O' Approval. I always like to see hungry, new people following up with campus housing offices and such.

Car rant!
My mechanic told me a fairly expensive part was broken, but that it was still under warranty, and so I could get Toyota to replace it free of charge. I called to make an appointment with Toyota, they said they were busy at the moment, but took my number to call me back. And then they didn't. A few weeks later, I tried to make an appointment with the online service. And they didn't get back to me there, either. A few weeks later, (yesterday) I made an appointment and dropped it off. (Hilariously, they couldn't find my appointment when I came in, and then later called me to ask why I hadn't shown up for it.) Today they called to tell me the part IS bad, and the other two are on the brink, so I should replace them too, for a grand total of well over $3000. When I asked about the warranty, they said I just missed it--if I had brought it in a month earlier, it would have been covered. The boyfriend made a small stink when we went to pick it up, and now they're petitioning Toyota to extend the warranty, since I DID try to set up an appointment while the warranty was still good, and they dropped the ball. Hopefully that works. Otherwise, it's a very expensive lesson in "don't take no (or nothing) for an answer."

I don't know the last time I had three grand in my checking. Glad I don't have a car. Good luck fighting the bureaucracy.
