Dude... seriously...

I agree. DSLR's are really nice. I mean it.

I very much like my camera and card, which were under $150. (Then again, I get a 30% discount...)

But what happened to under $400?

I have a Canon Powershot A640... I loaded CHDK on it and it's pretty good for a point and shoot (It's no SLR, but it still takes good pics...)

I enjoyed it myself. It keeps me entertained while I wait for the homework to pile up.
Homework! Semester Premier tonight!

For anyone considering a point and shoot camera, don't go off of megapixels! Small cameras with a high megapixel count actually take worse pictures than those with a lower pixel count that came out at the same time.
I would suggest looking through some of the reviews at dpreview.com. They even have a nifty buying guide! The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd seems like a good fit.

I'd like a camera that accepts standard American batteries with no charger, because I plan on taking it to Europe next summer.

Most modern chargers are global, meaning they work anywhere.

Are they? That's good news. Here's what I'm looking for, with a scale of 1-10 on importance:
Under 400$ [10] with memory card [8] and rechargable batteries [4], or at least one that doesn't eat batteries like popcorn [10] (preferrably AA, although that's still up in the air)
More than the 2x optical zoom my current camera has. [7]
More than the five megapixels my current camera has (I want something that will help me take advantage of all the beautiful Austrian things that I will see) [6]
A good LCD display that I can actually see [7]
Settings and effects to play with are fun, but not required. [4]
One that will hold a standard SD card [4], because that's what I've already got, although I would like on that is more than 256 MB like I have [10].
Other than that, do you guys have any recommendations on what I should want, and what number do they get?

Look at the one I showed you. It is a bit bulky, but it is everything you described, or search newegg to find similar stuff.

I would suggest any of these:
Canon PowerShot A720 IS ~$200 (2xAA battery, 8 Megapixel, 6x zoom, uses SD cards, 2.5" LCD, image stabilization, "Highly Recommended" by dpreview.com)
Canon Powershot SX110 IS ~$300 (2xAA battery, 9 Megapixel, 10x zoom, uses SD cards, 3" LCD, image stabilization)

And if you get a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot... be sure to install CHDK (

Did we ever figure out the longest time it took for a question to post?

Wasn't it a few years for that one
whistle question that Tao answered?

Depends on how you define to to be answered. If it is time from asked to actually answered, it is probably the bell one.
If you mean which question was in the inbox for the longest, no idea, but I did have one go for well over 2000 hours once. I am pretty sure it wasn't the longest though.

No, I mean, not how long it took for an answer, but the time between the submission of the question and the post.
