My PhD thesis involves (among other things) distance measurements to stars (SRc variables, to be exact), so it's one of the things I've been obsessing about lately. (Someone could totally figure out who I am with that piece of information!) And I just wanted to say that your answer was very well-written, accurate, and readable.
