I was told from day 1 that it wasn't--and I always thought it was a beautiful part of the culture integrated in the language.
In other news, I am spending about 2 months of my summer in Jordan! Yay for immersion Arabic learning!

I don't think it would be either, because then Spanish speaking missionaries and Hispanic/Spanish members would be told not to use phrases like 'Ojala' which has origins from Arabic which though it means 'hopefully' now, it meant something like 'if God wills it.'
Have a fun time in Jordan. I know someone whose there for the study abroad now so you might see him.

. . . and English-speakers shouldn't say "goodbye," because it's short for "God be with ye."

I know I've said "Dia duit" (or however you spell that...) and that's something like "God be with you."
I should really look that up. Sheesh, it has been so long since I've studied my Irish Gaelic... not that I ever studied much to begin with...
