i got a japanese version of one of the earthsea books for free at the studio ghibli museum (i guess because studio ghibli's newest movie is tales from earthsea... unfortunately the Sci-Fi channel owns the rights to distribute any Earthsea related movies/tv in the US, so i doubt we will be seeing a disney release anytime soon).

bismark, are you the 1 (so far) vote for "dinner suggestions"? b/c i gotta say that i marked that one for future reference for the next time that you told me you're hungry and asked what you should eat. haha!
as far as the height thing goes, whenever i see a couple who has an out-of-the-ordinary height difference (guy who is significantly taller, or a girl who is at all taller) i think it's so great and it makes me so happy! i just figure that they must really really love each other if they're willing to set aside the usual superficial stuff or social norms; it's like proof that the relationship has more to do with the real person. not that i'm a good enough person to date someone shorter than me, but i've never met any guys who are under 5-feet so it isn't much of an issue.

Uh, I liked all the ones I answered. I mean, obviously I found them at least a little interesting.
I enjoyed coming up with all the small round white things I could for the dinner one, I always like trying to get people to read my favorite books, and I was excited to know the real scoop on the traveling gnome.
Maybe there should be an "I'm a writer and I don't count" button.

what about the efy kids one?
i for one, would like to say that efy kids are lame. even if i was one for three years and participated in the talent show 2 out of those three years (fencing and a stand up routine, both went quite well).
but, really, they're only good for guys who have ginormous egos from escorting two girls to dinner.

height differences
Mabel, my boyfriend is 10 inches taller than me: is this significant enough to be "an unusual height difference"? (Yes, I'm sure some tall girls would look at me and think, Hey, Shorty, go date someone your own size! Oh well.)
Does everyone think height or age differences are less acceptable? While the age range I would consider dateable is admittedly narrow, I don't think the height thing is that big of a deal. Of course, easy for me to say: I'm 5'4". Guys shorter than me are pretty dang short and hard to come by. And I think the whole "I have to be able to wear 3-inch heels and be 2 inches shorter than you" thing is silly: it's not like wearing high heels is one's natural state.
I have found guys of nearly all heights to be attractive. At one dance, for instance, I was surprised to notice I was at eye level with the guy who had asked me, but he had a good haircut & dressed well: he was still a lot more attractive (to me) than some slicked-hair schmuck of average height would be.
Is the main thing that tall girls just don't want someone way shorter than them? Because if you are 6'3", like the girl in question, I guess I just feel that you could rule out a lot of great guys because they were 5' 11" or 6 feet even. Even tall (but not extremely tall) girls seem to cringe at the thought of dating a guy even an inch or two shorter than them.
I guess I just feel bad for short to average guys if tall girls refuse to date them and short ones sometimes date tall guys. You can lose or gain weight, or dye your hair, or completely change your wardrobe, but you can't change your height (non-dangerously).

I guess my whole point was that mabel said "they set aside the superficial differences" and I just wanted to say that height is not the only way in which you can be superficial: for instance, I don't care how wonderful, smart, talented, spir'ch'l a guy is, I do not take a glance if he has that side-parted hair thing going on. So maybe that's how it is with tall girls and guys shorter than them . . . they don't really notice them. And as to the guy being considerably taller, I don't think the guy cares as long as she's cute. Am I right? Well, within reason: 12, 14 inches, maybe?
So, changing the subject entirely, no one mentioned the Series of Unfortunate Events! I'm disappointed! Obviously, none of the board writers have read it, judging by the fact that none of them caught the allusion made in this question ( http://theboard.byu.edu/index.php?area=viewall&id=36439 ) to the series (All good people are well-read). So, just in case the person who wrote that question is reading, or if any of you hold my opinion on books in any regard, READ THE SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS! PS: don't watch the movie until you can really appreciate how horrible it is. Or at all.

I've read the series, and it's not that I don't like them, it's that they didn't spring to mind. Most of the things I recommended are on my shelves. They're not, because I haven't found them for outrageously cheap, yet. And I didn't find the reference because it's one line in howevermany books, similar to many of ther lines in the book. It didn't stand out in my mind.
Oh, and why don't you like the movie? The books are great, but I thought the movie was fun. And really pretty--I loved the credits and the outlandish sets, and I thought the two oldest children did great jobs, as did the relatives, and I didn't even hate Jim Carrey. Certainly worth the $5 I paid for it, last week.

well, ten inches is really not that much... bismark and i hung out a lot when i was in provo, but it probably looked funny when i wore flat shoes because he's about 15 inches taller than me...and i'll probably see my cousin a lot now that i've moved by him, and he's about 19 inches taller than me...he always gives me a hug whenever i see him, but it's mostly me hugging his waist and him hugging my head...haha...bismark would just pick me up to avoid that...makes me feel like a little kid...kind of like this other guy who was about 14 inches taller than me...he would kneel down on the floor and hug me...that was actually kind of nice...haha...but i met this cute guy this weekend who's kind of shorter...he's maybe, oh...only 10 inches or so taller than me...haha

well, I did like the movie, especially the look of the movie and the casting: even Jim-bo. However, it was an entirely different thing than the series, and people who don't get the whole, movies-are-different-than-books idea will, I think, be turned off from one or the other. Moral of the story: I enjoyed reading the books more than I enjoyed watching the movie. Doesn't mean they're not both good. I didn't like the plot of the movie as much as I liked the plot of the books. And I felt like it was a bad idea to try to cram 3 books into one movie.
