So; NaNoWriMo is soon to be on us like Wile E. Coyote on a painted wall. I, for one, am hoping to redeem myself from last year's less-than-admirable attempt. Anyone else planning on having a novel November?

I am planning on it. Let's just hope that English doesn't get in the way of writing.

Oh definitely. Fourth year in a row! I want to try for 100,000 again, despite work and a possible trip to Disneyland. Oh yeah, and that boy who thinks I should spend all of my time with him. : )

Now if only I had a topic...

I've never done NaNoWriMo, but I might try this year. I should at least try to brush the dust off of my poor novel that I haven't worked on in a year.

heh. The advice to write what you are passionate about/ know the most about always seems to leave me drawing blanks. I think this year I'll pick a topic that I'd like to know more about, and see where that leads. And c'mon, I don't expect you to spend all your time with me... :Þ

I think part of my struggles with writing is the fine line you have to walk between 'this is the most amazing thing ever, I can't wait to get on to the next chapter' and 'meh, doesn't matter that much if that didn't come out exactly right, keep on moving.'

I have started a couple novels in past Novembers, but never have made it through to the end. I sort of want to do it this year, but writing for the Board, writing a novel, and then actually doing well in school? We'll see!

How does everyone come up with ideas of what to write about? I have so many good ideas for short stories, but not necessarily novels. I like the idea of writing about something you don't know much about in order to learn about it.

Two years I've worked on stories I've had the ideas for for ages. One turned out really well, the other did not. The other year I got an idea while walking across campus listening to music - it just hit me.

In other words, I have no idea how to come up with ideas of what to write about. : )

I've always toyed with the idea of writing a novel, but I've never even pretended to try. (Except that once when I was like 10 and had Word Perfect that you saved by pushing F8 and such and my brother and his friend found it and mocked me for ages so that's when I learned how to password protect my document. And then never wrote in it again. But that password I still use to this day. Safe, I know.) But then the other night Yellow and I were up way too late, trying to fall asleep, but only succeeding in saying ridiculously stupid stuff that made the other laugh. And out of that came an idea for a book. So… maybe I should think about it more and flesh out more of a plot, then try NaNoWriMo this year?

I'll admit, the thought scares me a wee bit.

I may or may not try this year, but probably not. Last year I got about 15k. The book I've been working on since May is at 10k, with over 1k in the past week or so. I don't want to stop my current project just yet--the story just got a life of its own and I want to see where it goes. But I just don't see myself reaching 50k any time soon--a project I've thought about for years and started writing down back in 2008 is only at 40k.

Bob, here's an idea on how to come up with ideas, thanks to my Freshmen English teacher in high school:
Give yourself a time limit--5 to 10 minutes should work--and within that time, write down as many ideas as you can. Even if it's crap, write it down--at this point it's quantity, not quality that counts. After time is up, go through your list and look for possibilities. You'd be surprised what interesting things might come out of it. If it doesn't work, I'll give you a writing prompt, free of charge.
