I wonder how in-detail patent examiners look at patents

This Hub motor formed in a wheel's drawings have over 1,300 numbered features! I wonder how intimately familiar examiner J. Allen Shriver and assistant examiner Cynthia F. Collado had the time to get with how the thing really works and what the significance of each numbered feature was before they had to move on to the next thing in the 10-foot-high stack. And this is just a gas engine fitted in a bicycle wheel. I'd hate to be the one judging the next superscalar architecture from Intel or the newest whizbang cancer drug patent application from GlaxoSmithKline.
