Soon, what are we going to change?

Okay, so when I got back I had something like 100000000000000 user accounts waiting to be activated. So I've loosened up the registration process a little bit, and activated the most recent new users.

Hm, those are probably spambots...we had a huge influx of them, hence tightening up the restrictions in the first place.

You might want to consider looking more closely at the ones you activated, as well as potentially tightening things up again...though of course C4, bob, etc. probably have some input too.

I just changed the CAPTCHA settings to use a question-and-answer CAPTCHA now instead of the jumbled-image kind, as previously discussed
here. This
should work better, for us, since most spammers just let their bots go, and without customizing them for this site specifically they won't know the answer. (Real people, however, should very easily know the answer.)
So we might not need to turn the account approval feature back on, but I think it would probably still be a good idea to delete most of those new ones you saw waiting in the queue.

Ooo, yeah, I knew there was something I should have said about what's new around here. Telling you about the bots would have been a good thing.
At any rate, bots. We are occasionally overrun. And that's why the activation emails, most of which should have been taken care of already, and most of the ones that hadn't been needed to be deleted anyway. Because so many bots.
Hopefully LJ's actions will mean we no longer get 5-10 or more emails a day with new accounts we need to delete.
