Am I alumni?

Post by Fredjikrang »

Anyone have any ideas about why I get all of the BYU Alumni emails? I am still a ways away from graduating.

Unless I graduated in my sleep. In which case I wish someone would let me know.

Did you make a donation to the university? (I believe donors get the alumni magazine, so maybe they get the alumni emails, as well?)

I've always imagined you to be a philanthropic sleeper. Suspicions confirmed.

You'll never be an alumni. You'll be an alumnus.

Hmm. Learning new things every day! :-)

*Edit: According to my dictionary, Alumni is plural, but ironically, Alumnus is only for males, with Alumna being for females. Interesting.

And alumnae is the feminine plural form.

And it's not really ironic, it's just noun gender.

Maybe, but it bucks common the English convention of plural words by using an "s" ending for the singular, and no "s" for the plural, thereby making "irony" an excellent word to use. ;D

Irony: A condition of affairs or events of a character opposite to what was, or might naturally be, expected.

If Fred came across the two words, and expected the one ending in -s to indicate the plural, I'd say that requirements for irony were met. (That said, I'll admit that I didn't know what he was talking about when he said he found the word "alumnus" ironic.)

Exactly. Though, yes, my original sentence was not particularly clear there. I would like to say that I did it all just to spark and interesting side conversation about the proper use of the word "ironic," but I would be lying. I really just kind of got caught in-between thoughts mid sentence.

*takes a deep sniff* Yup, smells like academics! ;D

wouldn't the way the word "rain" is sung in that song make it more like a tetrathong? Or quadrothong?
(Also, those words look surprisingly disturbing out of context)

There was a time when I was proudly a multi-thong, then I moved to Utah and became a much less-exciting multi-flip-flop.

To speak greek geek, I think there's a missing ph in there. A quadrathong and a quadraphthong may be a teensy bit different.
