When you last ordered a tasty treat of lamb's meat with some veggies and tzatziki sauce all wrapped in a pita, how did you pronounce the thing you asked the clerk for?

I point to the menu and say, "that," awkwardly. :\ (After trying to pronounce it a couple different ways.)

I pronounce it "guy-ro." sometimes "gi-ro."

That is always my least favorite thing about eating at a Greek restaurant. I usually think ji-ro, like the mechanical top, but I know that isn't how it should be said, so I usually end up saying euro or something like that.

I am very much of the group that points when we don't know how to pronounce something. Much easier.

zhhee-ro. Am I wrong?

Actually I've never ordered a gyro. But that's how I say it when I talk about it, which is all the time.

Hmm. I've always said it like "hero," but "year-o" is probably more accurate.

I used to always say "Jai-row" to get on my friend's nerves since he insisted on the 'proper' "yurr-o" pronunciation. This practice started way back in 6th or 7th grade. Ever since then I still say it "Jai-row" even though (and maybe because) I know it grates on the purists who know better.

Year-o, but the r is not the hard r like in year, nor do I trill it. More of a soft r.
