Urban Gardening

As I mentioned over in the Random thread, I recently moved into my VERY OWN apartment. (Did I mention it's my VERY OWN?) Anyway, right outside my VERY OWN apartment, I have my VERY OWN plot of dirt on the walkway. I'm not quite sure what to do with it, though. It measures about 28 inches by 80 inches and doesn't get very much sunlight. Also, I live in north Texas, so I need something that can withstand a good amount of heat. I'm also intrigued by the idea of composting, but again, I don't have much space and I'd rather it not stink up either my apartment or the walkway outside the apartment.

Any thoughts?

(I have a hard time being serious for . . . any length of time, really.)

I don't know if raspberries can handle Texas heat, but we always planted them in the parts of our yard that aren't sunny enough to grow other stuff. Homemade raspberry jam is awesome :)

Tomatoes aren't going to handle a low light area well. Depending on how low "low light" actually is, there may be little outside of ground cover you can actually do. As BC pointed out, many berries can do OK with low (as in, 5-6 hours at least) light. Or you can do something like a rhododendron, depending on how acidic the soil is.

According to the internets, "Dormanred," "Blackhawk," and "Heritage" are the best raspberry varieties for Texas. If you go with this, just plant one or two at first, they'll spread.
