I absolutely hate that movie, and until I discovered the internet, I really thought I was the only one. Well, other than my mom, who saw it at a Relief Society party and was horrified. After the first few times I saw it, I started just leaving whenever they would show it in Young Women's or Sunday School. I'm not going to sit here and list out everything that I find objectionable about it, but basically I find no redeeming value in it and I think it's disturbing. And I don't say that about a lot of things. So questioner, if you're reading this, you're not the only one that feels that way.

My siblings and I always found this movie hilarious and watched it for that reason.

I agree with Yog--this is a fairytale. The film has a lot of charm and humor, but of course there are significant problems with the moral it teaches when examined more closely. Just like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and several other Disney films fall apart when you start analyzing the messages more closely.

I also agree with Genuine Article--the film is hilarious. It was always a relief to watch that in seminary rather than study scriptures (which tend to be markedly unfunny). "Mahana, you ugly!" turned the film into a genuine cult classic.

I always considered Jack from Jack & the beanstalk to be a thief and a murderer

No, but I think a lot of Mormon families consider Disney films part of the canon. I certainly watched them religiously.

It's true, there's a lot of problems with Mormon culture. I'd sooner have my children watch The Simpsons than cut their teeth on most Disney fodder. They'd certainly learn a lot more applicable lessons.

I think I need to have all the transcripts of The Simpsons published with verse-separation and footnotes, and with a nice leather carrying case.

Whatever. I still love Disney, and all of my children will watch Disney AND THEY WILL LIKE IT!
