What kinds of things could cause Firefox to run slowly and not shut down properly on a Macbook?

I'm throwing this out there with no practical research to back it up, but I would check to see if you have an application or extension that could be out of date or not working properly.
Also, though viruses and malware are very uncommon on Macs, you could check to see if anything has invaded your computer that way.
