I agree with this questioner. I know more intellectual types who are mildly or non-active, and the Board attracts such people. Another data point is that of four math tutors, all raised more or less in the LDS Church, non of the other three were currently practicing (and I was a mostly-active but mostly-non-believer).
But even in my Sandy YSA ward's boundaries, the activity rate was only 40% or so. And that's East Sandy, Utah. The person is probably seeing a lot of selection bias at BYU. If you get married, go on a mission, or go to BYU, it's a lot more difficult to leave, even if you were so inclined.

While I don't think Yog quite landed on any reasons as to why Board writers would leave, I would be inclined to think that having older, retired writers back would skew the stats. Most writers start as BYU undergrads and leave the board after a couple years. A BYU student cannot defect without forfeiting their position at the school so no one who mentally left the lds church could admit to such, nor could they officially defect, until after their BYU graduation.

I bet the students and faculty at King Saud University have to be even more careful when preprocessing their wordsHypatia wrote:cannot defect without forfeiting their position

Portia. Honestly. That's just FALSE. Proof.
Board Question #70269
"No Dice is a first-year law student on the West Coast somewhere. He manages to do most of his assigned reading with the help of copious amounts of saltine crackers and fruit snacks. Mrs. Dice stays at home with Baby Dice, who likes to do lots of baby stuff like eat Oreos and bonk his head on furniture. He keeps the Dices busy and sane. Here's a picture of him being a complete goofball on his first birthday, since--let's face it--babies are cuter than big people."
And next time, honey, include a sarcasm hashtag, please.
