Question #72261

I thought this was an interesting question. For what it's worth, here are the first ten (well, actually eleven) scientists I thought of:

Albert Einstein
Norman Borlaug
Marie Curie
Galileo
Gregor Mendel
Charles Darwin
Steven Hawking
Watson & Crick
Copernicus
Carl Sagan

I think it's interesting that all of the writers thought of Marie Curie, but no one put her on their list of best-known scientists.

I bet many people living today who watch TV would say "Oh I've seen that guy" if shown a picture of Michio Kaku. I don't suppose the average person would remember the name, but that guy is pretty much a staple talking head science guy on most sciencey shows.

Isn't Chris Hadfield somewhat well known? Or maybe others don't consider astronauts scientists?

Hmm. I'd say that astronauts are definitely scientists, but I think people tend to think of them as astronauts, first, and so they might not come to mind when trying to think of prototypical scientists.
