This is my cousin's name. It is said "uh-LEE-see-uh." With no room for argument.

Well she probably gets a lot of argument because every Alicia I've known has said it uh-Lee-sha.

I'd say uh-Lee-sha too, if I were subbing. But if someone didn't answer right away, I'd start trying other pronunciations. Sometimes I hate names, because no matter which way you pronounce someone's name, there's always a pretty good chance you said it wrong and annoyed them.

Another time I think many Americans give the 'c' an /sh/ sound is the word glacier. Most people I've heard say it say, as I do, 'glaysher' but when I've heard British people on TV say it, they say 'glassier'.

I know multiple Alicia's who each pronounce it a different way.

I know there are different ways to pronounce it. I just refuse to accept them.

This is Elang 223. Palatalization. The only time I've heard it otherwise was with my half-Cuban former roommate. (Spanish lacks palatalization in this position.)

It's the standard pronunciation because that is the standard feature of our variety of English. Giving your kid the name Alicia should mean a "sh" sound unless otherwise noted. Same with Patricia or Lucretia. (Patri-see-a? Really??)

I've known people who pronounced it both ways, too. But everyone who went with the Gio's cousin pronunciation was constantly correcting people.
I also knew a Pa-tree-see-a, but she was from Mexico. And since I grew up in a very Hispanic neighborhood she only had to correct the white people.

In my experience, white girls pronounce it "Ah-LEESH-a" and Hispanic girls pronounce it "A-LEE-see-ah."

I like the name either way.
