The question.

What movies did you all see this year? Did you like them or not or not sure? I'll give a real answer when I get back from a lecture, but I like hearing people's thoughts on movies. :D

I don't see many movies, because my husband doesn't like sitting for that long, but I liked Star Trek: Into Darkness. Although I can't decide if I like it more or less after knowing it's almost the same as The Wrath of Khan.

*The Philadelphia Story (DVD)
Mother of George
*Anna Karenina
*The Great Gatsby
The Way, Way Back
*Before Midnight
*Much Ado About Nothing
Steve Jobs
The Spectacular Now
Gravity
Don Jon
Captain Phillips

Favorites are starred. I've gone to the cinema a lot this summer and fall. The only one I disliked was Steve Jobs, but it was almost so-bad-it's-good.

ETA: haven't seen Admission yet (forgot about that movie, but I've seen it in Redboxes), and the Hunger Games Sequel is about to be released, and I'll have to wrangle a date for that, because I'm broke.

ETAA: Thank you, board, for reminding me of two excellent films I forgot I saw.

I also saw a new Star Trek film and all I remember is that Chris Pine was hot, Cumberbatch sounded like Alan Rickman, and that I was both terrified and not entertained.

I, too, was not overly impressed by Star Trek. :( I actually really enjoyed Wrath of Khan and didn't love the direction they took the movie, although I did appreciate Spock's personal growth. :3

Portia, now I want to see Anna Karenina! I forgot about it, but I'm still interested.

Let's see, movies I saw that came out this year:

Hava Nagila (The Movie)
Iron Man 3
Monsters University
Despicable Me 2
Star Trek Into Darkness
Gravity

Hava Nagila and Gravity were probably my favorites, then Monsters and Despicable Me 2, and then Iron Man 3 and Star Trek. Also, a lot of the independent movies that are on the list from the question are already on Netflix and I want to watch them (like Haute Cuisine, which looks like Devil Wears Prada with food).

Do it! The costumes are to die for, and I liked the adaptation much better than expected, as I am quite attached to that book. I did post a Facebook status though that the film strained credulity--who cheats on Jude Law?!

We don't get out to movies much. The only ones I can think of that we've seen in theater are Monsters University and Despicable Me 2. I liked both. Though, I liked Monsters U best.

Yeah, I think Monsters 2 was better. But they were both good. But it was better. So cute. :)

YOU GUYS YOU HAVE TO SEE THOR 2. I really enjoyed it, but then, I really like (almost) all Marvel superhero movies.

Anna Karenina is, unfortunately, still on my to-see list. Still. Arrg.

I saw Star Trek and The Lone Ranger due to Marduk's brother's insistence on family interactions being based around seeing movies together. Star Trek was okay, but mostly because of the nostalgia factor (and that I can still be sucked into a good spectacle). The Lone Ranger was the worst, though.

Monsters U was fun, though certainly not as good as most Pixar offerings.

I took my three-year-old daughter to many of the animated flicks. It's a fun outing we do - I go mostly for the popcorn.

The Croods (***) - This would be better for the 5 and up age. I'm not a fan of action films, and this was basically an action film - lots of sequences of being chased by saber-tooths. Although towards the end the plot surprised me with a bit of depth. I wish they would have gone more into the psychology of the characters rather than playing up the action. The jokes hit the right notes for the most part. I enjoyed it, but probably won't watch it again.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (****) - Well, I might as well come out as the brony that I am, I loved this movie and I love the show. Best children's programming on TV for sure, and they did a great job with the film. Good songs, fun story, scary but not too scary, good for adults and kids. Love it! We've watched it many times now on Netflix.

Monsters University (****) - This really felt like it was made more for the kids who grew up watching Monsters Inc. who are now beginning to attend university (I assume). I enjoyed Monsters Inc. a lot and have watched it many times on repeat, so this movie was a nice change from that, having some fun with some new characters. I of course love the purple arts-major guy, hilarious. My daughter actually really liked the film too, though, so they did a good job making this funny for both. The library scene is quite phenomenal. This film is an example of action sequences done right.

Planes (***1/2) - This was definitely an action film, so that's a mark off for me. I like Cars and the animation is great, there's nothing to fault there. Unfortunately, the nationality-based characters in this one prevent them from becoming really deep in any way. But I think they handled adult themes quite well, and it's a great movie for the 8 and above range. My daughter was too young for this - she liked it for about 45 minutes, and then was ready to go. Popcorn and candy kept her in her seat, though, and she talked about the flying-through-the-cold part a lot, so that was memorable.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 (**1/2) - I never saw part one, so I was afraid I'd be lost, but no, they do a great job with this not being dependent on the previous film. I really liked it, but I guess the humor was over my daughter's head, because she was bored like I've never seen. Then she was scared - food that can eat people seems to be a bit frightening of a prospect to her. Well, I tell her, what goes around comes around - you eat the food, the food will eat you! I think she had some nightmares :( So, great for older kids, I'd say, probably 8 and up.

Free Birds (**) - Oh my, this was a mess of a movie. Time travel and talking turkeys with neither one given a legitimate explanation or believable premise. A lot of quick action, lots of potty humor for the 5 and up age (referring to his 'glutes' and putting his butt in his face, etc.). An odd homoerotic dance sequence puts it over the top - I laughed at the pure randomness of it all, but I certainly didn't feel like I gained much of anything from watching this film. A nice romance blossoms, sure, but the conflict of 'should I go back to my time?' falls flat when you realize that his time sucks - who would choose that when the bird community of the past was so cool? Pizza and movies would get old, as we are all too aware while watching this film. The baby birds were cute, though, and the fire sequence was exciting and interesting.

Looking forward to Frozen. Also, I'll take a moment to emphasize again how much I hate 3-D - I need this trend to stop.

Adding my thoughts on Frozen to round out my list for the year.

Frozen (****) - Very good movie. The animation is remarkable, the characters are easy to relate to, and the issues of sibling bonding and isolation are very important. The heroines (two of them!) are complex and interesting and they actually solve their own problems. The sidekick snowman turned out not to be annoying - he plays the knowledgeable fool character quite well, with some terrific voice work by the Book of Mormon musical guy. The songs are overall quite good, with a couple of outstanding songs in the mix ("Let It Go", "In Summer"). My daughter loved the film, too, so that's what really matters.
