I remember writing a story in the late fifties or early sixties about a rocket ship that had transparent metal windows. My teacher asked me why my rocket ship needed transparent metal windows. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Later I learned that it wasn't necessary. I didn't realize that Star Trek later used my idea. I probably wasn't the first, anyway.

I thought Laser Jock did a pretty good job of answering this question. There were a few mistakes, but I don't suppose they are very important.
