Re: Daily random tidbit.

I'm reading an article about swearing for a paper. It says that in English there are three basic categories of swears, one of which includes words that are related to religion (like "damn" or "hell"). I never realized it, but "bloody" is in that category, which makes s...

Re: YSA 1st Stake

Ah. So glad to be out of singles wards and stakes. (Over three years now.) Very consistently there has been an undue emphasis, in my opinion, on cultural aspects of Mormonism and not about becoming good Christians. I feel like I need to start an "It gets better" campaign for people in YSA ...

Re: Temple Marriage

Alright. I want to take the actual question that GA was posed (not hypotheticals about what the girl could actually be thinking) and give my own answer. My girlfriend and I have begun to start to talk about marriage. She wants to postpone a temple wedding because she wants to be sure we'll last. I u...

Re: Temple Marriage

I think the boyfriend makes it pretty clear that girlfriend doesn't see a temple wedding as an option at this point in her life. I think she is right, and he is wrong to insist on what is the more restrictive, and arguably more stressful, option in this situation. Reasonable minds are allowed to di...

Re: Temple Marriage

Wired, being freaked out by the temple is hugely relevant. That's probably the biggest reason I'm not thrilled at the idea of a temple wedding myself. I'll give you the benefitof the doubt and assume you don't understand this being a dude. As a girl, we all dream of the perfect day...kinda lame but...

Re: Lost Finale

I'm not super happy with the way the finale didn't explain things (how is Jack's dad there if he was used by the MIB? But I guess Locke is there too?). Locke and Christian (Jack's Dad) weren't used by the Man in Black; he assumed their forms. It seems once someone dies on the island, the MIB can as...

Re: Temple Marriage

That's the problem then, I guess. Getting married outside the temple is still a marriage in every way shape and form. It should in no way be construed as a "starter wedding" and although the goal is a temple marriage, marriage outside of the temple first should not be construed a failure ...

Re: Temple Marriage

Let me start with this: I disagree pretty often with Genuine Article, but I almost always disagree with Portia. That may be coloring my comments so try to adjust for my bias. Cf here . Wow, Genuine Article was very harsh without knowing the woman's side of things. She's not looking to film a four-ho...

Re: Stealing my slogan?

Depending on the uniqueness of the slogan, how long you've used it, etc. you could have an intellectual property claim. You might consider sending a cease and desist if you think it's worth it.

Re: rebuke?

I love that Hypatia, and Sauron, and I all just come out whenever we vehemently disagree with something. Though I haven't seen and Sauron in awhile. I suppose I should ask a vehemently anti-OWS question. He's having a pretty intense semester. I like that DARE and Genuine come on just to say somethi...

Finally started listening to "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. Decided to listen to it while I exercise since I don't have time during the rest of the day. Thanks NerdGirl for the recommendation!

Age of consent in many -actually most - states is 16, so I don't think it is as unambiguous as you think.

Re: The term "feminist" and its connotations

The blog post lists the following as a qualifying question for feminism.... Do you believe in political, social, and economic equality between men and women? I'd be interested to know what people think that means. I suspect that what "political, social, and economic equality" means in prac...

Re: Regulation Stifling Business

I think the main question here is context. Sure there are industries that need regulation reform. But a lot of people will read this article and think "less government regulation everywhere!" would be a good solution. Some areas are broken, and some areas are working fine. I don't see the...
