Re: Younger/same age/older guys
Eh, I look at it from the objectivist point of view, and marriage is pretty far down the list of interests, if not something to actively avoid. I'm not so sure that age plays that much of a role one way or the other, but you keep using 'selfish' as a pejorative and not everyone would agree with you ...

Re: Alternative Medicines
I have no scientific proof, but I do know that a mix of lavender and peppermint on my neck can drastically reduce one of my headaches almost instantly. And as someone who has suffered from headaches my entire life and has done a lot to try and limit them without living on drugs, I am impressed. It'...

Re: Alternative Medicines
I am resurrecting this thread. Essential oils are getting popular in my ward, and I feel like it's an expensive trend that I don't want to be a part of! But I don't want to completely dismiss them--I did some google scholar research and some essential oils do have anti-microbial properties, and the...

Re: Drinking glasses
I would like to say that in my apartment three years ago we had tons of glasses. Of course, most were old spaghetti and salsa jars, but they worked just fine for us! Aye, it's a bit tough to know when to stop counting mason jars, we've got at least 4 that are always in use, 2 pints and 2 quarts (on...

Re: Foundational Myths/epics/stories
Aye, those are definitely a large factor, albeit somewhat tougher to pin down. A modern "Cinderella story" may have its roots in any number of traditional ones, for example. Hmm. Well, I'd argue that the fact that so many cultures have Cinderella-esque stories is significant, but I think ...

Foundational Myths/epics/stories
Recent conversation has me thinking about root stories that underlay many of our modern expectations. For example; much of modern fantasy looks towards Lord of the Rings, which in turn draws heavily from the Nibelungenleid (and Beowulf for the Hobbit). Obviously much of Western culture's views on he...

Re: Movie Goofs
Ah, but it's been years since I've looked at slipups.com. I found it via its sister site eeggs.com, as I'm more interested in easter eggs than movies, but it seems like it'd be a nice touch for this thread.

Re: #66554 - Sisters and missions
Because we've been given tithing clearly in scripture and modern-day revelation, I just don't think the Lord would ever require anyone to pay more than 10%. He might require other things of them . . . but he wouldn't change tithing. I don't think God wants us second-guessing commandments based on p...

Re: #66453 - Public scripture study
It's mainly the fact that we share it, although Judaism is kind of a bad example because there are distinct communities in Judaism (orthodox, conservative, and reformed) that interpret the religious law in different ways, which isn't the case in Mormonism. Hmmm. Perhaps we could start coming up wit...

Re: #66554 - Sisters and missions
My sister's situation was somewhat similar to the querent's in that she didn't want to go on a mission but felt called to nonetheless. In fact, I think the not wanting to actually helps in the calling. If you really want to go, its harder to know if the call is divine or native. When you really don'...

...It's like when people try to study at the gym. Last week I saw a guy on a stationary bike highlighting a reading assignment and I thought, there is no way he's retaining any of that. Why doesn't he do that at home? Actually, for some, this is a better (if not the optimum) method of study. Kinest...

Re: Am I alumni?
wouldn't the way the word "rain" is sung in that song make it more like a tetrathong? Or quadrothong? (Also, those words look surprisingly disturbing out of context) There was a time when I was proudly a multi-thong, then I moved to Utah and became a much less-exciting multi-flip-flop. To...

C-span, and if you miss one riveting moment, you can always catch back up . All joking aside, I consider it one of the few channels on cable that might actually be worth spending money for. On-topic, I've not seen the film in question, but I have pondered scenarios that may tie in: Christ's sacrific...

I'm afraid part of the struggle is in simple terminology. Even pulling from the articles you linked "Since no ideal sources of either variety exist (all real-world examples have finite and non-zero source impedance), any current source can be considered as a voltage source with the same source ...

Re: Feminism, Defined
I've been turned away from multiple jobs due to my gender. Only one business was kind enough to let me know that, which I'm ok with, as was I with the job listings that come right out and say "males need not apply". Its when I showed up and completed half the interview and was dismissed ou...
