Pecan Sandies

I grew up eating them, and I'm from Utah, so I don't think it's a regional thing. The cookies are just really, really good, so it wouldn't surprise me that old people, with their great knowledge and experience, would eat them, knowing that they're the best.

I also love pecan sandies. They are especially good with a little lemon curd or jam.

My husband and I laughed so hard reading this answer this morning. It might still be a bit of a regional thing- I am from Ohio. But I have to say the funny part was that last night I gave my toddlers each one after dinner, and they both only ate half the cookie. My kids never pass up cookies! Sad.

Well, I've had pecan sandies, and found them pretty good, although not phenomenal. I was going to come make this topic, but I was going to do it with a poll for us to vote on. I did get offered them from my aunt the first time I remember having them, but I strongly associate her with (while not necessarily old) frumpiness. So maybe it's a frumpy person thing. Just kidding. But really.

Someone at BYU needs to go to the Food Science department and convince a student to do this as their senior project. Set up a taste panel with a representation from all age groups. Serve them Pecan Sandies and three or four other types of cookies. Have them rate each cookie. Tally up responses and analyze the results. Man, I wish I was still there ... that would have been a great project.

My grandparents are the only people I know who eats them. My wife agrees that they're old people cookies, but she didn't vote. That aside, I find them to be phenomenally insipid cookies, not worth the calories expended to chew them.

Or the calories they give you. They're surprisingly high-calorie for the (in my opinion) lack of taste. If I'm gonna clog my arteries, gimme some Samoas.

I wandered all over the house looking for this book so I could give you an accurate quote, but turns out I had it pretty much right the whole time.

Anyway, from Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief:

Now, you can have pecan shortbreads. They taste like crumbs from the bottom of a toaster, all scrunched together. But Grams wanting some was all the excuse I needed.

This might be one of the reasons I think of those cookies as old-person fare...the stereotype is perpetuated in children's literature.

Hey, I will admit, they aren't the best cookies in the world. I am rather medium on them myself, which is probably evidenced by the fact that I have been married for 7 years and this was the first time I bought them. I just didn't see any reason for them to be old people cookies.

But I am also glad to hear you love me anyway, random internet folk!
