Slight confession

Post by TheAnswerIs42 »

So, I don't admit this to people I know in real life, but . . . I don't know any of you in real life, do I? :) Besides, I figured that since a lot of you like to do NaNoWriMo, maybe someone could help me out. I, to relieve boredom as a SAHM . . . write Harry Potter fanfiction sometimes.

Yeah, yeah, keep laughing. Anyway -

I hit a road block in one story, and my husband just laughs at me because he has never read the books, so does anyone out there enjoy A) Harry Potter and B) writing and C) have time on their hands to debate plot points with me? I would love to have someone to talk through things with, but . . . this is such a nerdy hobby that I don't really admit this to people I know . . .

Anyone?

One of my daughters loves Harry Potter fanfiction. She loves Harry Potter. She also aspires to be a writer. She is currently about to finish her sophmore year at BYU, majoring in English. If you are interested I could figure out some way to get the two of you connected.

Heh.

Heh heh.

If I can keep from laughing, I'll give it an attempt.

But I'm assuming that you write fairly decently, and that you use correct punctuation 98% of the time. Otherwise, the deal's off.

Thanks, Gio, for the vote of confidence. I like to think I don't suck. Admittedly, some people do. I think that is part of the fun of fanfiction- it is like American Idol, where you can read some of them and laugh at how horrible they are, mixed with some people you can't believe aren't published. Meanwhile, the content has the appeal of a sitcom- you already know the characters and the "world", so you don't have to invest a lot of time into each one. You just go "what if one day they did . . . this?" Just make sure you stick to a good site. SIYE is great because (amazingly enough) the president is a BYU English major. So they won't post things with typos or bad grammar, and they also won't post porn, which fanfiction.net seems to specialize in. Yikes.

If you are curious, I can link one internet 'nym to another for ya. My stories are posted here. And NerdGirl or Vorpal Blade's daughter- I need some directions on the ending for the one that isn't completed yet- Hindsight, Plan B. If you read it and decide to help me (and I suppose this goes for anyone) respond here or PM me or something!

Oh, and for those who are only midly curious or slightly bored, Shelter is my favorite that I have written. And it is only a one-shot (one chapter long).

Heh. Thanks for the vote of confidence, bismark. :)

42, well, I suppose I shouldn't be ashamed to admit how much I love Harry Potter. I mean, I did write as Niffler. I can't claim to be a great writer, but they did let me write for the Board, so I can't be awful. I'll go read them and see what comes of it. If nothing else, I can probably help you fix any canon discrepancies.

Thanks! Mostly what I need help with it plot development - especially time/space continuum plot holes to sift through. I think I'm okay with my canon stuff- and the story in question is Alternate Universe, so I don't even have to stick to canon if I don't want to. But another eye never hurts anything.

Well, I've PMed you my thoughts. Tragically, I couldn't read the story you actually wanted help on. So, uh, if you didn't like the comments I gave on the other, feel free to trash them. I promise to not be offended. :D

I'm not ashamed of my Harry Potter fanfiction. I link to it on my Facebook and my blog. The only thing I'm ashamed of is that I haven't published anything in like 3 years!!

I started working on one last month but got roped into this Doctor Who ficisode that's taking all my creative juices...and I'm enough out of the habit of writing that I can't work on more than one thing at once.

Anyway. I'll read 42's and comment on it. I'm not stellar but I'll at least not make fun of you. ;)

Answeris42, I'm reading your stories in between the graphs I'm trying to make all day and hopefully I'll have some thoughts for you later.

And CisFor, I'll have to go look for your stories later. :)

Okay, I've finally read your story, and I'm a huge fan. I can't wait to see how it ends! And I'll think about and try to have some helpful thoughts for you. :)
