Hey, LJ. Just thought I'd let you know: I installed Ubuntu. And I'm loving it. I used wubi installer (not sure about the site for that. Sorry), and it was positively painless. No partitioning, no CDs, no jump drives. Just straight up installation like any Windows program. And I can dual boot too! You don't have to, mind you (especially if you pick a distribution like Ubuntu, which is aimed to simplify and have good defaults), but you can.
(If you're not ready to switch all the way, you could always try either dual-booting or, my recommendation, running it in a virtual machine.)
PS, I love linux, and I've only been playing for 15 minutes.
