Concerning the classical vs modern post: JK Rowling on par with Beethoven? Really? Hmmmm.....

The funny thing is, coming from Humble Master I was about to post that I was surprised to see Rowling make the cut but someone like Alan Moore didn't.

Then I went back and re-read his list....

Hmmm. now that I think on it, it probably means I don't know Beethoven as well as I should. I'd probably not like much of his early work either.

I'll retract any misgivings I may or may not have been having.

For now.

Debussy came like, almost a century after Beethoven after a huge paradigm shift had taken place in classical music. I was going to write a response to the question, but Claudio wanted it to post before I was able to answer it to my satisfaction. Basically, music isn't one-dimensional--you can't compare any two musical works and come to an objective conclusion about which is "better." Comparing Beethoven and Debussy (just as an example) is just as impossible as comparing Scott Joplin to Janis Joplin to someone familiar with both eras of music.

It was a preference. Not a blanket statement.

I know. That's why I said the second time that I was just using it as an example.

By hotter, I hope you mean that you prefer her music, because the woman was ugly. She had some pipes, but she was ugly.

And Scott Joplin was a pimp. Don't discount his contribution to music history or I'll punch your teeth out.

The revolutionary in me finds her sexy, I'm sorry. Scott Joplin just doesn't do it for me.

Also, I heard she used to eat live cats.

I was watching the Ed Sullivan show on PBS once and saw Janis Joplin. She was likely the most terrifying woman I have ever seen on television.

If you think Janis Joplins is scary-/ugly-looking, you obviously haven't seen Jocelyn Wildenstein (a.k.a. "The Cat Lady").

So Jocelyn Wildenstein underwent plastic surgery several times to make herself look more feline, because her husband loved cats, and she was desperate to save her marriage. It makes me want to cry.

Ok fine. You guys win on Janis Joplin. But I reserve the same attraction rules to be attracted to Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell.
