Chick Flicks

As a rule, I don't like chick flicks. I don't want to watch some sappy story where stupid things happen and people are stupid and then they get together in the end despite everything! Lame, lame, lame!

I also don't like sad movies, so bittersweet chick flicks are also out.

I vote Princess Bride. I've seen Ever After a time or two as well. And I do watch Jane Austen movies.

I'm a sucker for chick flicks. You've Got Mail is perhaps the most classic chick flick of all time.

Personally, I think the writers took a few too many liberties in their definition of what a chick flick actually is. In my opinion, a true chick flick is dripping with sappiness throughout and can be a little overwhelming for the male species. However, there are some movies with other elements that can be equally enjoyed by dudes. For example, if the movie has enough comedy to offset the romance, I would call it a romantic comedy. I present to you, a scale:

WAY SAPPY: the true chick flick. Men flee for their lives.
A Walk to Remember
You've Got Mail
The Wedding Planner

MEDIUM SAPPY: the romantic comedy. Enough humor for at least some level of dude enjoyment.
The Bachelor
Just Like Heaven

NON-SAPPY: definitely a relationship in the plot, but the movie is not overly focused on it. Lots of dude-worthy elements.

What about movies like Steel Magnolias? Definitely not dripping in sappiness, but is still considered a chick flick in my head. ("My colors are Blush and Bashful." "Her colors are Pink and Pink!")

Hmm...it's hard for me to say exactly, because I'm less familiar with those two movies. I've seen them, I just can't remember them well enough to say anything constructive about them.

Perhaps there should be another factor included here. Frillyness? The cry factor? Elevation of estrogen levels while watching?

Now, honestly, what's wrong with my definition of a chick flick? It's a movie with a chick in it, thus, a chick flick. Who said anything about having to be sappy? Those kinds of movies are called lame.

If all that's required is a relationship, that would make every superhero movie, James Bond movie, and Jared Hess movie a chick flick. But then I don't consider Princess Bride a chick flick.

What about About a Boy? Sauron and I disagree about that one.

I think I forgot to clarify my non-sappy category. Those do not qualify as chick flicks.

About a Boy...it's been a while since I've seen it, but I would say not a chick flick. (I might be biased though...I hated that movie)

Touche. Nevertheless, seeing as I don't find Hugh Grant attractive, I'm going to maintain that it's not a chick flick. Because it's not about the romance. It's about Hugh Grant getting over himself. This is why I love that movie.

Yuck. I've never liked Hugh Grant in anything. Sure, his face is beautiful, but his personality is about as ugly as they come.
