Rank the Pixar Movies
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/59630/
They've already come up with some pretty good lists, so I'ma just going to say a few things:
I haven't seen Toy Story 3 yet. Curses.
I love Up and WALL-E. WALL-E is my very favorite, though.
I haven't seen A Bug's Life in years, and really have no desire to. It's probably on the bottom of my list.
I agree that Cars is a little sub-par when talking about Pixar movies, but I still like it.
Monsters, Inc. is why we call one of my sisters Boo.
I've never been too big a fan of Finding Nemo.

The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.
Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I'm working on creating an average ranking across all the writers, plus some other fun stats. I'll post what I've got when I'm done with it.
Plus, if anyone else wants to submit a list, I can have fun with those stats, as well.

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I thought Toy Story 3 deviated too much from the kid-friendly genre and drifted into the realm of action/drama. My nephew was terrified.
However, I would submit that UP is hands-down and by far the greatest Pixar film ever created. I was shocked that several writers rated it lower...that movie is a work of art.

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I never got around to rating the movies, but I have to admit Wall-E and Cars are my least favorites. Phew, what a weight off my conscience!

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I think the writers nailed it when they reminded everyone that they are ALL fantastic. Kinda hard to rank.
I do think it is interesting when they bring in more adult concepts (UP characters unable to have kids, Toy Story 3 being so scary) into kids movies. But hey, I'm an adult so I like it, and my kids aren't phased by it either, so I guess I don't care. In fact, my daughter is rather obsessed with Pixar movies, which is alright by me. We had Nemo month, where she requested it almost every day, and now she is into the "nice monsters" of Monsters, Inc.
I am suprised that so many people put Cars down. That opening sequence was amazing. And Nemo. Marlin wasn't totally loveable, but Dori was so hilarious I still laugh, even after a month of seeing it almost every day.
Anyway, I liked the tier concept, because I can't possibly rank them outright.
Top (watch them all the time):
Toy Stories, Nemo, Cars, UP
Middle (Enjoy them a lot, but have qualms with them):
Monsters Inc, Wall-E.
Not my Favs (they are still Pixar and above most movies, but not the best ones):
Bug's Life, Incredibles, and that Ratattouille thing I can't spell.
PS. Bob, you MUST see Toy Story 3! I was so happy when it came to our discount theater so I could see it a second time.

So, for some reason I haven't ever even seen Toy Story 1 yet, but apparently there's a scene in it where Buzz Lightyear's tries to fly and he can'tf, and it made my nephew cry.

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I have really strong opinions on this, but I enjoyed them all. (I was going to say, "Oh how I loved them all," but that's only really true through about number 7.)
1. WALL-E
2. Finding Nemo
3. Toy Story
4. Monsters, Inc.
5. The Incredibles
6. Toy Story 2
7. Cars
8. Ratatouille
9. A Bug's life
10. Toy Story 3
11. Up (However, the first 15 minutes? THE BEST PIXAR THING EVER. Possibly. WALL-E was just so great.)

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
Optimistic. submitted a comment doing exactly what Katya mentioned. I don't like it because The Incredibles sits at number 2 all because Paperback Writer doesn't know a good movie when it punches her in the face (or produces a forcefield around her face, or runs around her face, or turns into a lead baby around her face, etc.).

All except #11 on my list is subjective to my mood. Toy Story freaked me out as a kid and while I know the graphics were good for its day, it looks comparable to bad kid shows.

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I really couldn't think of a top favorite, so didn't figure I could make a list. Picking a least favorite was much easier, so in reverse order:
11. Up (I've not seen it, so really can't give a good rating yet even after seeing all the trailers, I've never felt interested in seeing it,
which solidifies this at 11 instead of earning a bye)
10. Monsters, Inc. (I couldn't relate with it. I'm not a city boy, nor have I ever worked a cubicle-type job, and I presume much of the humor was targeted at that demographic.)
9. A Bug's life (eh, its been a long time since I've seen this it may rank higher but again, I presume since I've not pulled it down to watch, I'm tacitly downranking it.)
8. Finding Nemo (eh, again. I'll watch it, but usually only if I'm the one with the remote or with people that won't mind skipping the first third and selective scenes throughout.)
7. WALL-E (Not horrible, by any stretch. Yet not really ever something I'd choose to spend another couple hours of my life watching.)
6. Ratatouille (Fairly significant jump here, I rather enjoyed this one just not as much as others. Really, a rating system should include numerical ranges, so you can give top threes something like 9.3, 9.4 and 9.5 whilst the jump from WALL-E to Ratatouille for me would be on the scale of a 4.5 to a 7.0)
5. Cars (heh, the town of radiator springs seems almost an exact replica of Green River Wyoming. Or wait; its exactly like how many hundreds of towns in Arizona, no, New Mexico, wait.... Again; being from a small town really helps make this shine, methinks.)
4. Toy Story 3 (Another jump here, probably where the top echelon mentioned by others would start for me. Watching this with my mother, who owns a large scale daycare, really helped make it stand out for me. Of course the Cool Hand Luke homage was just simply comic gold.)
3. The Incredibles (Another amazing movie, hard to rank this, TS3 may go up or down with subsequent viewings, but for now #3 is on lock)
2. Toy Story (Wow, a classic. A film with the weight of history along with a stellar cast in a great story.)
1. Toy Story 2 (Wait, a Disney sequel that actually stands on its own feet? Is that even possible? The fact that for a while I had forgotten that it wasn't a stand-alone film makes this unique in my experience.)

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
Some other stats to note:
Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Up were all nominated for the Academy Award, Best Animated Feature (the other four either existed before this award or it hasn't been decided yet). Of this seven, only Monsters Inc. and Cars have lost. Up is the only animated feature in the history of forever besides Beauty and the Beast to have been nominated for Best Picture.

BECAUSE THEY STARTED NOMINATING TWICE AS MANY LAST YEAR. If they had always nominated ten, Pixar would have a half dozen nominations and half of the other Disney films during their Renaissance era would have been nominated.Dead Cat wrote:Up is the only animated feature in the history of forever besides Beauty and the Beast to have been nominated for Best Picture.
I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST UP BUT IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN NOMINATED IF THERE HAD ONLY BEEN FIVE NOMINATIONS LAST YEAR. JUST SAYING.

Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
You know, I only saw the last half of WALL-E, so I don't feel like my opinion on that movie is particularly credible...but I remember being somewhat bothered by the underlying "save the Earth" message. Being politically moderate myself, I don't know exactly why that bothers me--perhaps because it makes me feel like the movie has an agenda. I would've liked it a lot more without that theme. And then there was Happy Feet...which was blatantly worse in that regard.

Point taken. I agree. And even though Up is still at the top of my list, I hope Toy Story 3 wins the best picture this year.Gimgimno wrote:BECAUSE THEY STARTED NOMINATING TWICE AS MANY LAST YEAR. Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
thebigcheese, if you only saw the second half, you need to see it again. The first half completely makes the movie. Basically, if you hear dialogue, you aren't watching the great parts of the movie.
Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
According to the writers of WALL•E (and you can decide whether or not to believe them), the story wasn't motivated by any underlying political agenda. They wanted to tell a story about a robot who was all alone, so they came up with the idea of him having been abandoned on a planet of trash. Then they wanted the people who left him to come back, so they had to come up for an in-story reason for that. It did end up with a strong environmental message, but it didn't start out that way.thebigcheese wrote:You know, I only saw the last half of WALL-E, so I don't feel like my opinion on that movie is particularly credible...but I remember being somewhat bothered by the underlying "save the Earth" message. Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
I didn't answer the question, but I will say that by far my least favorite Pixar movie (of the ones I've seen) was Wall-E. I can't explain why I have such a strong antipathy toward it, but I can't stand it and do not plan on ever watching it again. It baffles me that so many people like it as much as they do. The visual effects were impressive, as they always are with Pixar, but the characters and plot...no.

I'd rather it turn invisible... Just kidding. Man, I didn't say it was the worst movie ever (that's reserved for many other movies). It's just my least favorite of the Pixars.Gimgimno wrote:Optimistic. submitted a comment doing exactly what Katya mentioned. And to Katya, I have not seen The Iron Giant, but my husband says I must. So I guess that's our movie this weekend. I'll let you know what I think.
Re: Rank the Pixar Movies
This was difficult. I gave up until I realized I didn't have to justify my choices. Then I could arbitrarily put them in where they may or may not actually be. But I still feel strongly about the last one.
1. The Incredibles
2. Monsters, Inc.
3. Cars
4. Ratatouille
5. Up
6. Toy Story 2
7. Toy Story
8. Finding Nemo
9. A Bug's Life
10. Wall-E (sorry! Maybe it's because I've only seen it once, in theaters, but still the only reason I want to see it again is because I love Hello, Dolly. Also because maybe if I were watching it with a guy it would give him the hint to hold my hand, but since we're not supposed to watch movies with people we're dating anymore that's a lost cause)
I also haven't yet seen Toy Story 3. All my siblings went and saw it with their friends, and there's not as much incentive to go to the movies when it's just my parents and me. So basically my list has a major flaw.
