My general policy is that the picture should reflect who you are in some way, shape, or form. Bridal pictures tend to make me think you are a newlywed. If I know you have been married for two years, I feel like you are misrepresenting yourself. But hey, maybe you still feel like a newlywed, and want all of facebook to know it! (But really, I think it's more likely you're just too lazy to find a more current, decent picture of yourself.)

And if you want your profile pic to be a fictional character, or a picture of you when you were six, that's fine too, I guess. Just know that my brain will try to find connections between the you-I-know and the you-that-your-picture-reflects. So I may see the Elizabeth Bennett pic and think of you as a romantic-heroine-type or a self-deluded-wannabe. And if I see your six year-old chubby cheeks, I may think of you as a lovable kid-at-heart, or an immature-spoiled-brat.


I'm really not going to be the "Facebook Profile Picture Police". I was just griping.

Is it better or worse to have sour grapes if I am fully acknowledging and cognizant that I am having sour grapes? Or exhibiting sour grapes, or even not having sour grapes. I don't know what my relationship is to the saying, only that the saying is so accurate right now.

huh, I always took the phrase as a positive thing. Recognizing that you're belaying your desires by modifying your perceptions can be fine and good, if not taken to delusional extremes, or at the cost of another individual.

You took sour grapes as a positive thing? Being jealous of another's achievements or possessions is a good thing? I can't imagine that you'd think that. Maybe I have the phrase wrong?

It's from an Aesop Fable, right? The Fox pretends the grapes he wants (but cannot get) are sour because he is jealous/bitter/envious. It doesn't have a positive connotation in my mind.

Yeah, it's saying "I can't have it so it must not be that great anyway." I don't think I need to be specific about what area I'm exhibiting this behavior in, but recognizing is only the first step...and the only step I've managed yet to take.

I see it better to alter your thoughts to lessen a desire for that which you can not have than to continue to pine. (ie. Curbing a gambling craving by telling yourself that you wouldn't win anyway.) Granted, there may be better options than sour grapes, but in and of itself, I don't see it as a bad thing.

While apparently this is not uncommon, I'd say it is just about the most frightening thing I can imagine.
