My favorite high school English teacher loved Calvin and Hobbes and encouraged her students to read it, to the point of having several collections in the room for students to read during the reading time at the beginning of the class. She loved that they could learn more vocabulary words from that comic than from pretty much any young adult novel you cared to name.
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

My brother learned to read by reading Calvin and Hobbes comics. He was struggling with reading, generally, and the stories he was learning to read were also dead boring, so he wasn't very motivated. BUT, we had some Calvin and Hobbes collections around the house and those were interesting and funny enough that he was motivated to learn to read them.

And why exactly has no one mentioned Hobbes?
