#60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
I definitely second Mico's love of "This Little Babe." If I'd answered the question, I probably would have said "Riu, Riu Chiu," except it looks like David Archuletta's recorded, so maybe it's not so obscure any more?

Re: #60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
I third This Little Babe and second Inconveniently Willful's Where Shepherds Lately Knelt. I attended my old high school's Christmas choir concert recently and that was the song I was looking forward to the most and the first one of the evening that I really enjoyed.
Some others I love: In the Bleak Midwinter (which seems to be pretty popular now, actually), Carol of the Shepherds, and There is no Rose of Such Virtue.

The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

I really like "A Little Christmas Music." Also, I couldn't help but notice that Queen Alice's suggestion, "In Dulci Jubilo," will be sung by University Chorale at their concert tomorrow at 7:30 in the de Jong [/shameless plug]

This song may not be so "lesser known" and it may not be so Christmas-specific (uhhh, so I might be breaking all the rules)...but I'm partial to "Song for a Winter's Night" by Sarah McLachlan.

I really like "Joy to Everyone This Christmas" by Jenny Jordan Frogley and David Osmond. It's probably my new favorite. But I only discovered it because she gave it away free last year, I think on her website. Except now her website is under construction.
Re: #60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
I absolutely LOVE basically everything by Sarah, so I thought I'd point out that (although I love this version, perhaps more than the original) it is a cover.thebigcheese wrote:This song may not be so "lesser known" and it may not be so Christmas-specific (uhhh, so I might be breaking all the rules)...but I'm partial to "Song for a Winter's Night" by Sarah McLachlan.
The original is by the incomparable Gordon Lightfoot (an Albertan, just like my daddy) who is one of the most amazing lyricists ever.
On topic: I love Good King Wenceslas, again, mostly because I view lyrics as being more critical than melody.

Meh, I like the Sarah McLachlan version a lot more.

Speaking of Gordon Lightfoot, this was one of my favorite news stories of the year:

Oh, I remember this! We were supposed to sing it in Chamber but never spent enough time on it.Imogen wrote:here to vote for "o magmum mysterium," specifically the version found on the linda rondstadt christmas album because it's the version i sang in choir in high school.

I sang that song in high school! Loved it. But I don't remember it being particularly Christmas-y, though thinking about it now it probably is.
Re: #60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
it's known as a christmas carol because it talks about mary and the virgin birth. i found the sheet music for it online so i've been geeking out about it all week.mic0 wrote:I sang that song in high school! I am in love with Wexford Carol and, although not strictly speaking a Christmas song, Alexander Lloyd Weber's Requiem.

I love that song too! I never sang it, but toured along with a choir and got to hear them perform it in multiple cathedrals in Europe (I was with the band). It's absolutely gorgeous.Imogen wrote:here to vote for "o magmum mysterium," specifically the version found on the linda rondstadt christmas album because it's the version i sang in choir in high school.

Re: #60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
David Archuleta sang a very sweet little song called "The Cat and Mouse Carol" with the Tabernacle Choir at their concert. I rather like it. And it's way obscure.
Re: #60952 - Lesser known Christmas songs
oh! i love "children go where i send thee" as sung by audra macdonald and the MoTab choir. i like that one a lot.
and i vote for "good king wenceslaus" as most underrated christmas-esque song ever.
