I already left a comment about this on the Board, but I just had to get this off my chest:
Catholics do not ask Mary to save us or answer our prayers. We ask Mary and all the saints to pray FOR us or to intercede on our behalf with Christ. There are prayers to saints, but the sentiments of the prayers are to be passed along to Christ and that they can act as agents of Christ. For example: when I lose something (which happens often) I'll say the prayer to St. Anthony (St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come around. Something is lost, and must be found), and, if Christ wills that I find the thing, St. Anthony is the guy designated to guide me to the lost object.
I don't know if I explained that very well. It makes sense in my brain though.

Re: Ave Maria
Nicely explained. It's like heavenly delegation.
I still wouldn't play or sing Ave Maria in a LDs meeting because Mary doesn't hold the same place for us, theologically. (I wouldn't be offended if someone else did and I'm all for using a lot of traditional liturgical music in LDS services—Ave Maria just happens to be enough over the line that I wouldn't choose it, myself.)

Re: Ave Maria
I'm glad you posted a comment, because I've spent enough time in Catholic worship services that I was pretty sure that was how it worked, but I'm not Catholic so I'm no expert. Also I've heard Ave Maria played as prelude music in sacrament meeting before, and I don't know of anyone who complained.

Which Ave Maria? (If it's Gounod, you can always say you were playing the Bach prelude it's based on.NerdGirl wrote:Also I've heard Ave Maria played as prelude music in sacrament meeting before, and I don't know of anyone who complained.
