It seems like putting the free end towards the wall prevents waste in my house. Not only does my toddler seem less attracted to a roll than a dangling end, but if she does attack the roll just spins freely instead of spinning paper down which is then torn to shreds. As long as I know that the toilet paper was put on this way, I don't have to fumble blindly for the end.

Yeah I actually remember discussing this in marriage prep 3 years ago (that's right, folks, I am educated and qualified to get hitched!). Apparently it can be a big deal which way the paper goes, and while the majority prefer the free end toward the user, if there's a toddler around it's much better to have it facing the wall, for the reasons you mentioned: waste and random attacks.

And if this is about the only thing I remember from marriage prep, well, at least I'm prepared for future toilet paper altercations with my sweetie.

It can also be an issue with cats.

However, in absence of toddlers or cats who like to play with TP, I'm with the "facing out" crowd.

Totally facing out, though it wasn't until now that I even considered the other side. I didn't realize how much putting it toward the wall could help.

I don't pay attention to it at all either. But on the episode of the Simpsons where the kids get taken away and the Flanderses become their foster parents, one of the things the social worker puts on the report is "toilet paper hung in improper overhand manner."

I only pay attention at work, where I load the dispensers with the loose end towards the wall. this isn't to be stingy with toilet paper, as much as to maintain an easy to find usable end of toilet paper.

Someone could invent a large-diameter rod that just fit in the standard toilet paper roll and had a frictional hold on it and had a little switch on the side so that when the switch was locked, it wouldn't turn. With an initial commercial campaign "Only $19.99, but wait there's more, we'll give you another 6 for no extra cost!" you could probably make as much money as someone is for any other junk you see on TV like microwave bacon holders, vacuum shark steamers, etc... Junk products must be profitable or you wouldn't see so many commercials.

Start out the commercial in black and white with a frowny-faced woman watching a child or cat winging the roll with a huge pile of TP on the floor and a voiceover "tired of blah blah blah?"

I'm going to have to go with the side of, "you're crazy!" on this. I'm very much on the band wagon of the toilet paper should face out* (and if it's not and I'm at a home I'm comfortable in, I will totally change it if put on the "wrong" way) and when the toilet paper faces the wall, I can't for the life of me ever find it. I'll spin and spin the roll never to have an end appear. It's very aggravating to me. I'm sorry, but putting the end towards the wall does NOT maintain an easy to find usable end of toilet paper. At least in my opinion.

*Also, I have a toddler. And somehow I have taught her not to touch the toilet paper roll and she seems content with this lot in life. This may all change when she's potty trained and actually gets permission to touch the TP roll. And I may grudgingly change my direction at that point. But until I am forced into it, I am a die hard supporter of TP faces the person.

The way the dispenser is designed, combined with the low quality tp we use, having it face out make it difficult to find the end, at least for me.
