To clarify, can you point out which professions already used would not count, under this rule? (Not that you're applying the rule retroactively, I just want to understand where you're drawing the line.)Dead Cat wrote:To prevent this round from going forever, I think I should employ a restriction a la What's My Line? and say an occupation means they are salaried or self-employed. This restriction will start tomorrow, so if you've been holding onto one that doesn't fit the new guidelines, play it now.

King, queen, roller derby queen, gambler, prophet, and wizard would not count. There's probably at least one other on the list that doesn't work either, but I don't know enough about how they get paid to eliminate it/them entirely.Katya wrote:To clarify, can you point out which professions already used would not count, under this rule? I figured this new rule was coming, but I'm surprised at your definition. Being a king or queen is a salaried position in my mind, along the same lines as being the president. Just because they inherited the position does not mean they don't get paid for it. That's what taxes are for.
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

Re: Encore: Occupations
Nope. A song about a blackleg (strike-breaking) miner. I was going to do the verse where they threaten to kill him. Or possibly the one where they mock him for not being able to get any.Katya wrote:Were you going to do "Oh, My Darling"? Re: Encore: Occupations
Yeah, I'd be interested to see criteria here.... I can show you dozens of people who make a living gambling. Also, our prophet at least gets stipends to pay for living expenses, as do most GAs. Wouldn't that count as "salary?"

Re: Encore: Occupations
Yeah, but the song that mentioned the word "prophet" was about Adam, who didn't get a stipend for being a prophet.Marduk wrote:Yeah, I'd be interested to see criteria here.... Re: Encore: Occupations
So, if some can't make a living at it, it doesn't count? ;P
Also, Adam totally got a stipend. Inheriting the whole earth is actually a pretty big salary, if you think about it.

It's more the fact that, in my mind, they can do absolutely nothing and still get money. It isn't all that advisable to do absolutely nothing because the mobs will come with their pitchforks, but they could still get away with it for a pretty long while.bobtheenchantedone wrote:I figured this new rule was coming, but I'm surprised at your definition. And besides, the king or queen would be more likely to be the mystery guest than a normal contestant anyway.

Maybe I should have the terms "respected professional" and "profitable" (no pun intended)? Just because Mom and Dad gave you an allowance does not mean you were salaried, after all.Marduk wrote:Yeah, I'd be interested to see criteria here.... Basically, people, if you know or know of someone making an honest living doing it, I'll count it. If not, you can still play it, but be prepared to argue for it.

No, if the majority of people who have had that role haven't formally made a living at it (including the person in the song), then you shouldn't count it by default.Marduk wrote:So, if some can't make a living at it, it doesn't count? ;P
(I do love how Encore rounds end up devolving into the most random arguments, such as whether "na-na-na-na-na-na-na" counts as one word or seven.)
