If they don't need immediate help, a card is OK, too. They may not read it right away, but they'll appreciate that you sent one when they're ready to look at it. (When my roommate's brother died very unexpectedly, that was one thing that surprised her—how much she appreciated the people who sent cards.)

I probably would go with a card as well. I'm assuming you are in a singles ward, so there are probably two different wards as well as other social/familial groups helping the family. I'd send a card, and be ready to offer any other assistance that was needed.

Me practicing pickup lines with my mother.

Me: "I like tall pretty girls, so I thought I'd come talk to you."
Mom: "Did you just say that?!?!"
Me: "Say what?"
Mom: "Say it again."
Me: [repeats]
Mom: "Oh, that's not what I thought you said. I thought you said you liked top-heavy girls."
Me: facepalm

Our bishop died about a year ago. We volunteered to serve food and water and clean up at his service. If you have any photographs of the guy at ward activities or something, maybe share them? I don't know, I never know how to properly handle things.

I've never seen the movie Iron Man, but apparently Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) has a minor role. Maybe I'll rent it and see if I can find him.

Even if you were looking for him, I'm not sure you'd recognize him. (Apparently he's was an executive producer for the film, so Jon Favreau convinced him to take a small role.)

I wonder what exactly executive producers do. Is that the technical term for schmoozing with connections over lunch at a café talking about life or whatever in order to get funding?

I think so. And they make sure the film comes in under budget (or close to it). And it's not a bad idea for someone who was a child actor, but doesn't want to act much any more, because they do have the necessary Hollywood connections.

Also, Peter Billingsley was an EP for Elf (another Jon Favreau film), and he's got a small role in that, as well.

You're probably right about the not recognizing. I found Peter Ostrum, Charlie from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, who is now a large animal veterinarian in New York, and I don't suppose I'd ever connect him with his childhood face.

For the viewers at home, I found this:
Image
I'd say when you see both pictures right next to each other like that, it's easy to say "Yeah, that's him." But if you really just saw the picture on the right, I'd actually doubt even people who have seen A Christmas Story would say "Hey, that's Ralphie!"

So of course, the one day I press the one button on the instrument that would send half a litre of water flying everywhere would be the one day we have a very important client tour coming through. Of course.

The super-blue eyes help. But even with the adult picture as reference, I'd say he's still hard to pick out in Iron Man, because of some makeup and costuming choices.

According to IMDB, he plays someone named William Ginter Riva who has this conversation with Obadiah Stane, played by Jeff Bridges (I think I can pick him out):
William Ginter Riva: Mr. Stane. Sir, we've explored what you've asked us and it seems as though there's a little hiccup. Actually, um...
Obadiah Stane: A hiccup?
William Ginter Riva: Yes, see, to power the suit... sir, the technology doesn't actually exist. So it...
Obadiah Stane: Wait, wait, the technology? ...

Woo hoo! Iron Man is on FX right now, so I don't have to rent it. What a coincidence.

Despite having a stressful day, I have found that I'm remarkably happy today.

Also, for all of you just getting back to Provo who haven't had a chance to go to the store yet, I have leftover pizza. For some reason I decided to make 8 pizzas for 6 people. And now I have about 6 pizzas in my fridge.

I'm... intrigued. I live near the Provo library.

Basically what I'm saying is, I would be happy to save you fridge space.
