Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
I typed "Quo Vadis is a book." in Microsoft Office Word 2007 and got no squigglies, red or green.
Derived terms here besides the one already mentioned include non quo (not because) and ne quo (not to any place, no whither).

The student jobs site has become infinitely better in the many, many years since my absence. Hooray for universal login! I have high hopes for a job I just applied for, as I fit their requirements to the letter,[ but I need a confidence boost from you people that having had one terrible semester four years ago will not bar me from happiness, employment, or future academic success...
Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
yeah if it's just one semester you can usually explain that it was really rough for various reasons. We're all humans after all!
Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
We have so many intelligent and accomplished people here who did all sorts of things that weren't on the "checklist" - dropping out of/changing/taking on second graduate programs, broken engagements, unexpected mission-going, I think even the patron saint of the Board had a rather terrible semester and is clearly not just smart but accomplished - but I look at me, and my perfectionism doesn't allow me to say "we're all human." That link that was posted about the "wait, I have no desire to work here at Quaker Oats" was really inspiring to me, because I think that I am about the most conformist drone there is, and maybe it took not being perfect to realize that I didn't want what I thought I wanted.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
this might sound weird but after I got married, I didn't have to worry about making money (that sounds terrible), and I was like "well, teaching freshman composition sucks, I want to do something else!" I'm not sure, but I think a lot of people might feel the same way after they get a good-paying job after college (if they can manage...). Like, "okay, making money is nice, but there's something I'd rather be doing right now." I feel like at some point, even if you keep being a conformist drone, you'll realize if you're unhappy or not. Or am I too optimistic?
But I think sometimes having an external pressure can be motivating for me. For example, this site I'm using to learn kanji also has a forum, and it's exciting to see other people talk about how much they can read now that they've been studying for six months.

I had way more than one terrible semester and it didn't stop me from getting into grad school or med school. Seriously, I failed like 6 classes in undergrad.
Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
I have seen this played out among many of my friends. (Especially the ones who dropped out of grad school.)Portia wrote:Maybe it took not being perfect to realize that I didn't want what I thought I wanted.

Who are these kids on Glee that play music for the Glee Club? I mean, a constant theme throughout the show is that these kids are the biggest losers in the school, so who are these kids who play whatever they want at the drop of a hat, even outside of rehearsal?
On a related note, I'm procrastinating finals.

They are what I like to call in the Plot Device Club. A very select group, indeed!Zedability wrote:Who are these kids on Glee that play music for the Glee Club? I saw a photoset recently of the pianist telling sue Sylvester thanks for firing him because it was the worst job ever...is that real? also I always thought the musicians looked older than high school...but who are we kidding, all the actors are older than high school...

I'm making a list of reasons why it'd be cool to be a guy. This is the list so far:
- Facial hair
- Ties
- Man hairstyles

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
no need for makeup is a great thing. As is lack of shame (ie I leave the house wearing whatever I want, much to the chagrin of my mother.)
Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
No period.
No cultural norm expecting some use of makeup.

I do these things.Giovanni Schwartz wrote:no need for makeup is a great thing. As is lack of shame (ie I leave the house wearing whatever I want, much to the chagrin of my mother.)
I also have no period when I'm pregnant. Which is its own mixed blessing.
But I've always been jealous that boys can pee outside.

No bras.

This bacon cookie is making me queasy. Why am I still eating it?
And why did we put bacon in a perfectly good oatmeal-craisin cookie???
Bacon does not go in everything. It is not even that good. /probably unpopular opinion

Also, no shaving your legs or armpits. (but then you'd be hairy. Gross).
I can't decide what kind of gift to bring to a reception I'm going to on Saturday. It's a second marriage for both. They already have a house, and all the house-y stuff. They're not registered anywhere that I know of. Target gift card?
I always feel like Target is the slightly fancier version of Walmart.

Ties? NO. Ties are a reason NOT to want to be a guy.
Also, you don't have to shave the legs or armpits, but you do have to shave the face, and very frequently.
