I'd place myself at a solid 6.
I have the advantage of living in Salt Lake County, but I think this advice holds true. French is definitely a liberal major, up there with film and theater, so I do fine. (The Man on the Street about guns in the DU today made me sad though. In my view, they were all 8 to 10 conservative.)5-6 Be fairly discriminating in who you talk to about politics on any level, and try not to talk about politics too often. You'd be pretty okay in a more liberal major, but would have to be quiet (or at least extremely cautious and reserved) when political discussions arise in G.E. classes, or if you were in a conservative major.
Even more liberal are my library coworkers. I'd put them at an average of 6-liberal - lots of artistes, hipsters, and beard-card-having-actors.
The political environment became rather toxic in 2008, with the Proposition Which Shall Not Be Named. I used to care a lot about having my viewpoint known/validated, but I mostly avoid such discussions.
When it comes to the Church, I'm easily a 9, so I really just shut up there. I think it helps that I dress conservatively. Amazing what people think when you dress like a, well, librarian.
