Sorry, I'm trolling? By saying I agreed with what 42 said?
Marduk wrote: Then 42 remembers a past insult, claims that "everyone else" was insulted and offended by Bob, because a few people were, says she will "stay out of it" but first wants to get her insults in without anyone else getting a chance to respond. Then Gio trolls the whole point by adding his +1 to that comment. (For the record, just because YOU like something the way it is doesn't mean everyone who says it might be better to do something differently is wrong.)
Now you've kind of offended me. And I'm not really easily offended. All I was trying to do was add weight to her argument, by saying that she wasn't the only one who thought that way, and then I get accused of trolling? You specifically said in your rebuttal that "everyone else" was insulted without believing it, when it seems to me that bob is, in fact, the ONLY one arguing her point of view.

I don't mean to overreact, but I think that I need to take a break from this board for a while. If anyone wants to get in contact with me, you can facebook me or email/chat with me at [email protected]. I feel like this board has not become exactly what I need to spend so much time participating in.

I love you all.

This thread is ridiculous. For the record, my pride is just fine. Those of you who know me know that I don't take myself too seriously (thus the hyperbole in my last response). As I said before, the level of passion some of you have for Internet strangers' opinions is amusing to me, but I think I've unintentionally trolled long enough.

We can go back and forth on who's right and who's wrong, which opinion is stupid and which is the most rightest and bestest of all time, who is more like Christ (this must be the Mormon equivalent of Godwin's law) while railing against the other, and it's very tempting to keep replying, but we obviously aren't going to come to a consensus. Refuting the remaining arguments against me is left as an exercise for the reader.

I'll go back to mostly lurking, until the next time I get the urge to give sincere opinions and receive enraged vitriol in return (calm down, it's a joke... See how that works? It helps if you curl the edges of your mouth up and expel repeated, short bursts of air). In the meantime I'll be doing something mature, like playing My Little Pony with my daughters. Cheers.

If you feel that what I said doesn't apply to you, then don't listen to it. It is as simple as that. That was the point of toning my response the way I did; it was intended to give everyone a second look at how they've responded. If after a second look then you are satisfied with what you've said, then so be it.

As to me acting differently, I think you can see the tenor of the response between the two has been different. (Or maybe you're still feeling too attacked by the one, I don't know.) In fact, I think that everyone who has responded here has bias, and ought to acknowledge that, if I'm to acknowledge my bias. Obviously a comment that someone feels is attacking them directly is going to be perceived more harshly than one that doesn't, regardless of the actual tone of either response. But let's take a look at the different comments.

Bob said "the majority of your applicants a) are freshman or otherwise immature and b) think the Board is just the coolest thing and are really looking forward to the prestige." I can see how someone would be offended by this, not because it isn't true, but because she fails to acknowledge the many applicants who successfully break this mould. Then she suggested that BYU breeds a follow-the-crowd type mentality, or at least, students at BYU tend to be fairly homogenous and one could get more opinions on a wide variety of things by going outside that pool. Again, I can see how someone would be offended by this, however, it is true that BYU is much more homogenous than other university environments, and this affects the quality of the writing there.

Now let's look at the responses. Optimus said "Let me start by saying that I am not at all offended, rather amused that someone who is obviously still in the formative stages of finding her own meaning and direction in life, and at a rather late age for it, in my opinion, is calling others immature. (But you're very mature, so I'm sure this won't offend you.)" So he starts off with the intent to offend, insults Bob's maturity directly (note, Bob said nothing about Optimus specifically) says that she's too old for the state in life she is in, and says she has no position to call anyone else immature. This is all phrased in an entirely passive-aggressive way, meaning any response Bob has to call him out on this is taken away from her, lest she be called immature. I admit, here I ought to have stepped in and messaged Optimus, and told him these sort of personal attacks were not ok, but I thought if I let him cool down, as he felt initially attacked, he might see this for himself and take care of it.

No such luck. Bob tries to clarify what she said, even saying that Optimus, the person who just attacked her directly, had some good points. She admits the board has had many fantastic writers, and even admits it still does have many fantastic writers. She then clumsily tries to clarify what she meant: that choosing from a homogenous and fairly young group, and one from a group that tends to think the same way about things, will engender a sort of "group-think" mentality. However, again I can see how people would be offended, as this is the homogenous group they call home. She then points out Optimus's direct attack (perhaps even antagonizing him a little further, but certainly not without cause.)

Gio calls Bob's point of view "ironic" not acknowledging that this message board is an entity unto itself, and certainly not even the majority of what is housed here is directly board related. Again, belittling her opinion without acknowledging that there could be any truth to it.

Tally points out how much Bob generalized (which again, is true, so I don't have a problem with her response.) She also points out why she personally finds this offensive. Although she does this fairly forcefully, for the most part, she does it without attacking Bob directly. So good on her for that. Zed follows up with a good response, which disagrees strongly with Bob (which again, is totally fine. I have no problems with people disagreeing on here.) But she points out that she is giving her opinion, and that is that the board is a place for primarily undergraduates, so it ought to continue to cater to that crowd.

As the responses continued on, it looked like we were out of the woods (except Gumby calling me out of my mind, but I'm tougher skinned than most, so I didn't really care. If he had said it to someone else, I might've said something.) But then Optimus responded again. He brought up two writers who have absolutely nothing to do with the conversation (I'm sure Bob would have put them in the "fantastic" group) pointed out many things that they had done since their retirement (again, absolutely irrelevant) and used this as evidence why Bob's argument had no weight. He then calls everything, not as Bob had done "a majority" but everything on this board "puerile drivel." And here I stepped in verbally. This was an unwarranted attack on her, a fallacious argument, and an unwarranted attack on everything that exists on this board. Certainly in the arms race of things, one side escalated the insults and attacks much faster than the other, and it wasn't Bob.

No, Optimus, it isn't Godwin's law, it is about behaving yourself around here. You don't get to make snide remarks to people and antagonize them as much as you like, and then just say "it is the internet, who cares?" Responsible behavior extends to online personas as well, and although you might see them as seperate, your kindness here actually matters. I expect your jokes in the future to be less about attacking people directly, because that isn't a joke, you're just hiding behind that guise to justify your attacks.

42, you asked for a genuine answer, I'll give you a genuine response. The board has waxed and waned in quality, as anything without the same group of people in charge is wont to do. Some of us here are of the opinion that we liked the board better in previous days, and that there are specific reasons why (namely, there was more diversity of opinion, and genuine thought put into answers.) Some of us are even of the opinion that the board could get some of its membership from people who don't directly attend, but who have other ties to the school, thus maintaining the BYU atmosphere, but hopefully getting a bit more diversity of opinion.

I'm interested in hearing more about this. What are we doing poorly, in terms of diversity? Which viewpoints are we not representing well? Again, when people beg for diversity of thought, or balance, they typically just want to hear their opinions more. But certainly we've got some ways to go in representing many different ways of seeing questions and problems.

This thread started by making what I think is a very valid criticism—too often we're just giving people contact information rather than doing the legwork ourselves. And certainly that isn't a critique of only one writer, or of some small group. We also heard a little about not reading questions carefully enough (the character encoding one). So that's something we should be working on too.

I'd like to be pointed to, say, five questions in the last 30 days or so that suffer from lack of diversity of thought, including specific viewpoints or opinions that were omitted that should not have been. This would help me, at least, know how to effectively canvas a variety of different viewpoints that would be helpful to readers.

Edited for spectacular grammar fail.

I go away for a few days and come back and find this? Seriously, people, do we need to all gather around a campfire with a jumbo bag of pretzels and sing "Kumbaya"?

Pretzels are gross. Unless they're soft pretzels. I could get behind that. Except Kumbaya is a dumb song.

Maybe I should be named "The Haters"...

You're playing a double standard here, Marduk. Unless, of course, you feel what I said doesn't apply to you.
(Please mentally insert whatever tone of voice that means "poking a little gentle fun, but not actually intending to insult you or escalate this madness.)

I feel some guilt over this thread, simply because I started it, so I'm giving you my take. Here's how I see it:

When I said "hey, hypothetically, how could the Board writer application be improved to attract more dedicated writers," someone responded by saying "the problem isn't the application, it's the pool." That's a position with some validity, but when she went into more depth, she got into territory that was bound to be defended. Although she didn't SPECIFICALLY mention names, she generalized to the point that it insulted many of us.

To say that it's a huge maturity failing to be a freshman or a sophomore is both rude to the freshmen and sophomores, but also plain wrong. Yes, most people gain maturity with age, but that doesn't mean that those who are still young have nothing worthwhile to say or cannot have a comparatively mature perspective.

The BYU thing runs into a host of other problems. Yes, of course it's a more conservative school than most others in the US, and of course many of its students will be as well. But conservatism doesn't necessarily mean dearth of thought. When I first applied for BYU, I was worried that I'd be in with a bunch of marriage-crazed cookie-cutter Molly Mormons and Peter Priesthoods. But when I arrived, although I found a few of those, I discovered that people are people, even within the LDS church. I found tons of diversity of political belief, of religious belief, of thought, of behavior, and so on. The more deeply I get to know anyone, Zoobies included, the more I realize there's no "mainstream" that they conform to strictly. Everyone is their own person, and you ignore and insult their humanity by saying otherwise. For me, BYU broadened my horizons in many ways. Other schools would have too, I'm sure. But to say that BYU is homogenous is to ignore the actual people that make it up. Plus, by saying that BYU is "mostly" one way, you make it so any examples of people who don't fit the picture you've painted are just "exceptions to the rule." It's another argument that can't be disproved, although from my experience, the true blind followers at BYU are in the minority.

From there, the thread fell apart. We've got people rushing to defend the age or school or Board territory. We've got clarification and backhanded partial admissions that one or the other party might be partly right. We've got attempts to jokingly point out the ironies and inconsistencies of various parties' logic. We've got wounded pride and real insults mixed in with amusement and shrugging it off. We're all on different pages, and acting and reacting on different levels, and it's way out of hand.

Deep breaths. Many of us value different life stages and experiences and viewpoints more highly, and we knew that already. In fact, we like that about each other, because it allows us to think more deeply and critically and examine what we believe and why. It's unfortunate that some of us think less of others of us, but that's how any group of people will be.

We can, as Marduk said, try to be kind to each other. Try not to give offense, and try to assume that no one else meant to give it, either. If you feel like you've been unfairly attacked or slandered, go ahead and say so, but try to give the other party the benefit of the doubt, and maybe take a few minutes to cool down, first. Be willing to say that you've misunderstood or even been wrong, because it goes a long way to smoothing ruffled feathers. For example: if it was presumptuous of me to write this, if I got the intents of others or the facts wrong, I'm sorry. I felt insulted too, but I'm sure I've also given offense, and that's not something I meant to do. Maybe no one meant to rub me the wrong way either.

And for this thread: well, I'm sorry I started it. Maybe this can end it.
