Dear my job since January 5:

Please make up your mind about whether you want to suck with the power of all that sucks or whether you want to be a fantastic, fantastic opportunity. This back and forth is giving me whiplash. Once you started triggering my emotional nonsense you went too far.

This is my second business class at UVU that has been full of students who talk over the professor with the professor blithely continuing on as if he has the whole class's rapt attention. Today, fed up, I turned around and informed the group behind me that there was actually still class going on and that they should be a little quieter until it was over. One of the girls muttered that the whole class was talking, not just them (YES THAT'S THE PROBLEM Y'ALL WERE JUST LUCKY TO BE CLOSE TO ME) and they were quiet for only a couple of minutes before starting up again.

I went up to the professor after class because this is RIDICULOUS. He said something about "well maybe they're working on their group projects" (this is okay when you're still trying to finish your lecture??) and it turns out one of the guys in the group had followed me up there and jumped on this. Yes, they had been trying to work on their group project, and I had better just not sit near them if I don't want to hear them talking, and how dare I be so rude as to call them out on it (admittedly my tone was sarcastic), and the professor agreed that I needed to be nice.

No. No, I don't. If I'm sitting in a class trying to pay attention and learn, it is not up to me to be accommodating when others in the class want to talk among themselves. If they really find their own conversations of more value than the lecture, they can go out in the hall. I don't care if half the damn class is doing it, I still paid to be there, I'm still trying to learn, and last I checked it was my kind of student that was catered to in the classroom.
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

I hate when students complain about having to come to class. You paid for it, why wouldn't you get your money's worth? Very few teachers actually take roll, and even if they do, if you don't want to come, then don't come. Just because someone wants to talk doesn't mean they have the right to talk wherever they like.

When I taught writing 150 at BYU we had a strict attendance policy, and more than three absences resulted in dropping your grade half a letter. We also had classes that were small enough that students couldn't get away with talking the whole time.

I hate classes that require attendance. There have definitely been a few classes where I would have done better and had more spare time by just reading the textbook on my own.

My CS class right now is a case in point. I just do other homework while I'm there.

I was in a physics class at BYU with my friend once (like a small, 4th year physics class) and this weird guy (that sure narrows it down in the physics department) was sitting beside us and just having this constant running commentary and wasn't taking the hint that we didn't want to talk to us. My friend finally said, "Could you please stop talking? I'm trying to listen and take notes." And he got all upset and said, "It's a free country and I can talk if I want to!" Good grief.

Hey now I didn't know current college students still had the residual social skills to carry on a face-to-face conversation, rather than having it mediated by a device. *slow clap* :P

My inlaws were staying with us a few weeks ago and inadvertently unplugged our chest freezer. We didn't find out until yesterday, and now we're out over $200 worth of groceries and two gallons of breastmilk that I had pumped for our baby.

When people in a forum say "oh, that's really easy!" without actually giving any explanation on how to solve the problem. Uhhh, thanks?

I'm extremely disturbed by a moral system that lumps in premarital/any gay sex with MURDER, embezzlement, and child molestation. Two thumbs way, way down. Doing your ex without a condom is foolish, yes, but on the level of attempted murder or spouse abuse? Not even CLOSE.

I'm against the Stasi-like reporting system of the HCO. (I've never heard of someone saying, imma report you! Seems weird.) Is this person going to snitch on the boyfriend too? He had just as much a hand in this.

And don't even get me started on masturbation as "sexual behavior." You have frequent, ill-disguised sex with your girlfriend? Get tested for STDs, IDIOT, and yes, inform any future spouse you're not a virgin (and disease-free and not a father, hopefully). Masturbating? No wonder people get these weird neuroses. When you think it's on the same level as grand theft auto and that guy you killed in Reno ... /mindexplodes

It's not really a super huge rant, since I've managed to find the humor in the situation.

BUT

One of our toilets has been having some problems with overflowing. This most recent time is the fourth, and it even happened once when we weren't in the apartment at the end of this past summer. Each time it's been treated as an individual event, possibly because they've been fixed by different people.

Anyways, I flushed it this morning just before my shower, it started overflowing, and long story short, the tank lid slipped into the tank and broke a hole in the bottom of the tank, so we're actually going to have to get our toilet fixed this time around...

Sorry to vaguepost. I just don't want to hurt anybody's feelings with what I'm about to say.

There's something I want but cannot have right now in my life. A big thing. I will get it someday but that day is not today.

Several other people who I speak to/regularly interact with recently got this thing. They wanted it and they got it. They are all aware that I wanted it and did not get it. They regularly complain about having gotten it to me for various reasons.

I know that there are no Pain Olympics and that no situation is perfect and that everyone is entitled to feel their negative feelings about whatever situation they are in (and there are always going to be negative feelings).

But man. Ouch.

No, there's no such thing as the Pain Olympics, but it's still possible to be judicious about who you complain to.

My school will lose 15 instructional days due to MOCK testing. That's 3 weeks of instruction kids are missing in the name of data.

I'm so done with public education.
