Z, Y, X...

Post by Dead Cat »

When I learned the alphabet backwards, I always sung the last two lines as "a little practice you can't go wrong--you can sing this backwards song!" Although I don't remember it, in Kindergarten they tested alphabet recognition with a backwards alphabet, and Mom says that I just started singing the backwards version. I think the test had to be redone scrambled.

Later in life, after losing much proficeny in ZYX's, I remember hearing the last lines as "now I know my Z, Y, X's--I guess that's not what you expected!"

Does anyone else have any other ways or stories about this backwards song?

I learned it in choir singing it to a scale. It never needed a resolution.

When I was in 6th grade, my group of friends went through this phase where we would say the alphabet completely out of order. The challenge was to make sure that all the letters were in there and someone would have a piece of paper with the whole alphabet written on it to make sure you didn't miss any. We were hopeless nerds. I don't think I've ever actually said it backwards, though.

In Wee Sing Together, the obnoxious twin boys sing what Dead Cat learned: "A little practice you can't go wrong, and you can sing our backwards song." Since I grew up bopping along to the tunes in that video, that is what I learned as well. I didn't know you could sing about knowing your Z Y X's.

Man, NerdGirl, I wish my friends were as cool as yours.
