#56646 Pseudonyms

Post by C is for »

I've been meaning to ask this anyway (wouldn't it fit great into Meet and Greet?) so this question is somewhat timely.

How did you choose your pseudonyms, o boardies?

I love "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe", and really liked that my 'nym for asking questions stated an answer. Also, when I had a "thinking spot" that I wasted too much time in, during my Freshman year of college, I put up a sign there that said "the answer is 42". To me, that meant "stop debating everything in the world in your head, because the answers are elusive and meaningless anyway, and get back to work!"

I was helping my friend Goober (she used to hang out here, if anyone remembers her) set up a Neopets account. Somehow, we named one of her Neopets bobtheenchantedone. I think my mother came up with that name before then, but Goober thinks she came up with the name. Anyway, I didn't really have a usual internet name before then, and I really liked bobtheenchantedone for some reason, so I took it.

Fun fact: when I last applied for the Board, I wanted to choose a different 'nym. I had the hardest time choosing one. Now I really kinda wish they'd let me in, 'cause I really like the name I had chosen: The Castle Party.
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

My 'nym, as many have already pointed out, is the Babylonian sun God. This guy moved to the chief spot in the pantheon by killing Tiamat and stealing the tablets of destiny. First off, that just makes him super awesome. Second off, I identify with it, since I've taken an alternate path to most things that I've earned and learned in my life.

For example, in junior high I decided I wanted to learn Spanish. So I signed up for Spanish I, and began reading books in Spanish. I found Spanish I to be too easy, so I transferred to Spanish IV. I quickly found Spanish IV to be too easy, so I dropped taking classes altogether and just kept reading, and speaking in Spanish whenever I could, to anyone I could find. I became fluent in less than a year. I also enjoy cooking, but have never followed a recipe. I decide new things in my head to try and do, and then cook them and see how they come out. This has varying results, but it is almost always pretty good. In high school, I took several AP classes, but didn't enjoy doing the homework or studying, so I didn't. I still passed all the AP tests with 4's or 5's. In fact, I've never studied for anything, or taken notes. Ever. When the time came to choose where to go to school, several different options being open to me, and most people encouraging me to go to BYU, I chose UVU. I wanted a place in a predominantly LDS area, that was able to highlight the minority thought, and I found quite a few UVU students indicative of the counter culture. It has been a very good education.

So in my life, I know what I want, but I don't like taking the same route everyone else does to get there. Just like Marduk, I set my sights on what I want, and I get it, but the traditional path is something I eschew.

Also, see Sealab 2021 reference.

I've always loved and been fascinated by Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky." I also love swords.

Hmm.... Don't ever watch Twin Peaks. It might spoil the name Bob for you.

Darth Fedora,

I think Joules is better than Ergs. Or Calories.

Damasta,

After I posted my remarks I looked up Vorpal Blade in Wikipedia. I was surprised to find it used in computer games. Cool weapon. I haven't played D&D since 1981. I supposed everyone was familiar with the Lewis Carrol poem.

It also shows up in the awesome Steve Jackson game, Munchkin.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berliner_(pastry) (apparently phpBB can't handle Wikipedia URLs all that well). I'm from Wisconsin, so many of the Canadian-isms make their way down here. Eh.

I dunno why I dropped the C... I've used this 'nym since 1995.

Yes, Joules was my real life nickname at the time. I don't really get called that much anymore though.

I actually did play Munchkin with my family just last Christmas. I'll have to look through the cards for vorpal blade. Most of my family does not know me as vorpal blade.

I like cats. I am very curious. Curiosity killed the cat. Hence, "Dead Cat."

Maybe I should have gone with "Werf killed while inspecting cats." Or something like that...
