My mother hates them for another reason: she thinks she should get a discount on her purchase for checking it out herself instead of having a cashier do it.
I don't like them because I am good at doing things wrong and there are so many ways self checkout can go wrong. I never go to one when by myself, and when others force me to it (by purchasing their own goods there when we are on a joint shopping trip) I require help almost every step of the way. Cue condescending laughter at my fear of electronics. ; )

The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.
I prefer them if lines are short because many of the cashiers I've worked with at the Orem Walmart are relatively cashier incompetent. They still look for barcodes, have to look up every PLU code when I buy produce, and are generally not very urgent. I was a cashier for a few years growing up, so it gets under my skin pretty easily. Checking myself out avoids all of that impatience and I get out faster than I would if they were the ones ringing me up. And seriously...what cashier that has ever worked at a grocery store doesn't know the PLU code for bananas?! Good gracious, people.
