I have to admit that I'm not sure what the questioner is complaining about. The fact that in college language classes you are expected to learn a LOT on your own? I took accelerated Spanish 101 for a term and while it was a ridiculous amount of work, it worked (except for the fact that I forgot it all... sad day). Does someone who took maybe 200-level classes know what the whining is about?

I'm not really sure what they're talking about either; I took several 300-level Spanish classes and thought they were all just fine. In fact, a couple were well above average, compared to classes in other subjects I've taken. (Dr. Fails is awesome, by the way, especially for 329.) But perhaps I just have a different preferred method of learning than the questioner does.

I couldn't say, but it does seem odd that someone coming with an extensive background in their high school program would not have sufficient skill to test out of it.
Methinks this individual is just upset at the requirement altogether, and to that I say tough noogies. A foreign language requirement is a staple of pretty much every B.A. program for English at just about any college one might attend.

I took Spanish 201 and 206. 201 was a conversation class and it did require an insane amount of work for a 0.5 credit class. We had class 3 days a week, labs 2 days a week, oral presentations, projects, etc. I understand it's a conversation class, and I didn't really mind all the work-- I just wished they would have given me more than half a credit for it. Spanish 206 was a good amount of work for the credit load. I felt like I learned a lot in that class.
